TACP Launches National Seat Belt Campaign to Promote Road Safety

04.06.25

The Touring y Automóvil Club del Perú (TACP), with the support of leading mobility platforms Cabify, DiDi, inDrive, and Uber, has launched a nationwide campaign titled “Buckle Up for Safety”. The initiative calls on all vehicle occupants—not just drivers—to use seat belts, aiming to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities by fostering safer travel habits across Peru.

Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of death or serious injury by up to 50% in the event of a collision. Yet, despite legal requirements outlined in the Consolidated Text of the National Traffic Regulations (Supreme Decree No. 016-2009-MTC), many passengers—especially in the back seat—continue to overlook this essential safety measure.

The campaign responds to alarming figures from the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ National Road Safety Observatory.
In 2024 alone, 86,757 road traffic incidents were reported across the country, resulting in 3,002 deaths and 58,747 injuries. The leading causes included driver negligence (28.3%), speeding (25.8%), driving under the influence (6.8%), and pedestrian recklessness (2.5%).

A Shared Commitment to Road Safety

The “Buckle Up for Safety” campaign is part of a broader Road Safety Commitment that brings together TACP and mobility platforms to promote behavioral change through three core actions:

  1. Driver Engagement: Partner platform drivers are encouraged to serve as road safety ambassadors by reminding passengers—especially those seated in the rear—to buckle up.
  2. In-App Messaging: Pop-up messages will be displayed in the apps to prompt users to fasten their seat belts before every journey.
  3. User Surveys: Campaign partners will collect feedback to monitor compliance and strengthen awareness around seat belt use.

“Road safety isn’t just the driver’s responsibility — it’s shared by everyone in the vehicle,” said Iván Dibos, President of the TACP Board of Directors. “This campaign is a call to change habits and foster a culture of respect and prevention that can make the difference between life and death.”

During the campaign launch and signing ceremony, Pedro Olivares, Director of Road Safety at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, welcomed the joint effort and highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in building a sustainable safety culture.

A Small Action That Makes a Big Impact

Wearing a seat belt remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent injuries on the road. The Touring and Automobile Club of Peru calls on all road users to adopt this vital safety measure at all times, as part of a shared commitment to safer mobility.
