Medical Programme

The FIA’s Medical Programme aims to advance the development of medical personnel in motor sport and support the introduction of new medical techniques and technologies.

It promotes best practice for medical personnel involved in all disciplines of motor sport through the development of training initiatives and educational materials.

One of the first publications to be released was Medicine in Motor Sport, a comprehensive guide on every major aspect of medicine in motor sport. Now in its second edition, in the form of an App for smartphones and tablets, it includes detailed explanations of medical techniques specific to the motor sport environment.

Another publication, AUTO+ Medical is the international journal of motor sport medicine. It is distributed digitally three times a year. Click here to read the latest issue.

Best Practice Framework

This best practice framework helps to facilitate a detailed understanding of the key elements required to develop or enhance ASN development programmes for officials, including specific principles for medical officials. The framework is split between two key areas: competency development and programme structure.

The areas contain what is currently considered by the FIA to be best practice principles, and they indicate the standard that should characterise an ASN’s development programme for medical officials.

It is the responsibility of the ASN to implement the necessary strategies to achieve these standards and, going forward, the FIA will develop a suite of supporting tools to assist ASNs in this area.

Officials safety training programme – best practice framework

The FIA has developed a new best practice framework to help National Sporting Authorities understand current best practice in the area of training motor sport officials.

Accreditation

The FIA will accredit ASNs that adopt the best practice framework and this is done at three levels – Achievement of Excellence, Progress towards Excellence and Commitment to Excellence. The ASNs most closely aligned to the framework will be able to apply to become Regional Training Providers and deliver FIA medical courses.

The FIA is helping to foster the development of regional training providers across the globe.
