ACC launches Don't Hit and Run initiative

The Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) has identified driver behaviour as a key road safety issue for the country and committed itself to develop an extensive campaign to educate road users.

Last year, Sri Lanka recorded the highest death toll count resulting from road traffic accidents.

A large majority of these casualties were due to driver negligence when escaping or leaving the scene of an accident without calling for assistance.

In 2017, the AAC – with funding from the FIA Road Safety Grant Programme and the support of the local authorities (Ministry of Transport, National Council for Road Safety or Ministry of Education) – launched the “Don’t’ hit and run” initiative which consists in raising awareness through public advertisement, leaflets, social media and trainings.

The AAC is organising seminars to improve driving instructors’ skills and awareness with the participation of well-known local speakers from the Police department, the national hospital and the Global Institute of Safety.

The project already garnered media attention and has been covered by the most popular newspapers.

Through this campaign, the AAC hopes to educate drivers on their moral obligations to rescue road crash victims but also on first aid, legal implications of such criminal behaviour, and ultimately to reduce by 30% within two years the number of death caused by hit and run drivers.
