RACC develops new website for senior mobility

The Real Automobil Club de Catalunya (RACC) has developed a website dedicated to elderly drivers to encourage an active, safe and healthy mobility.

Witnessing the increasing number of elderly drivers and their greater fragility as well as their desire to remain active and autonomous, the Reial Automobil Club de Catalunya (RACC), with the support of the FIA Road Safety Grant Programme, launched a project focusing on senior drivers.

This initiative aims to assess their skills and ability to drive, focusing in particular on their capacity to make the right decisions to drive responsibly.

The project has a global purpose, targeting the drivers themselves but also their relatives and health and mobility professionals participating in the promotion of safe driving.

To tackle risky behaviours and enable seniors to assess their skills to drive safely, RACC created a website composed of an online self-evaluation tool for senior drivers, including seven cognitive tests to test their vision, attention, memory, coordination and other perceptive and cognitive abilities.

The website also allows relatives of elderly drivers, who may be concerned about their road safety, to find relevant information and advice regarding how they can approach and plan a conversation about safe driving with their parents, as well as what help and alternatives can be offered to them.

Finally, the project aims to raise awareness among the health and mobility professionals involved in the process of renewing driving licenses. It offers tips, information and recommendations about medicines and their effects, sleep disorders, and other diseases that may affect the driver’s skills.

The FIA is currently scaling up this initiative, with the aim of making it available to all FIA Members through a toolkit developed with funding from the FIA Sustainable Mobility Programme.
