The BRAAVO (Bringing Road Safety Awareness and Advocacy to Voluntary Organizations) project, coordinated by the Road Safety Institute (RSI) Panos Mylonas and supported by the FIA Road Safety Grant Programme, aims to raise road safety awareness among young people by creating training modules available to FIA Clubs and Voluntary Organisations.

The BRAAVO one-year programme, also known as “Promoting Traffic Safety Culture in Youth”, started in January 2019. It has already received acknowledgment by various stakeholders, and has been presented at a number of distinguished events, such as the 2019 FIA Conference in Sun City, the annual conference of the European Association of Operators of Toll Road Infrastructure, and within the framework of the EU Road Safety EXCHANGE project and the 5th UN Global Road Safety week.

The programme will be implemented at the 24th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) in West Virginia, USA, from July 22 to August 2, where 50,000 Scouts from 170 countries will be present. During the WSJ, RSI’s team will implement:

  • Experiential training activities using road safety simulator equipment such as reaction test, collision weight scale, distraction game, alcohol goggles
  • Research on youth driving attitudes and behaviors regarding drinking and driving
  • Audiovisual materials like videos promoting #SLOWDOWN, #3500LIVES and Rear Seat Belt campaigns
  • “Holding Hands Event”, where young people from every nation stand solemnly in solidarity and pledge their commitment to road safety

RSI will also share know-how and important experience gained, work delivered and research performed during the previous WSJ in Japan, in 2015.

This training module is based on RSI experience through the EU project “AVENUE for Traffic Safety” and the “Do it Right” educational programme for secondary school students. It combines theoretical and practical activities addressing key road safety topics such as speeding, braking distance, seatbelt use, helmet use, distraction and drink driving. Designed for all FIA Clubs and Voluntary Organisations, the module has already reached 1,500 students in Greece, Mexico, and South Africa.
