Round 3 of the FIA World Endurance Championship will take place at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Italy. While The Prologue, the official preseason test, was held at Monza in 2017, the FIA WEC has never raced at Italy’s premier race circuit.

In early 2020, the FIA, the ACO and IMSA announced their intention to work hand-in-hand to create a joint top class for Endurance racing. The three parties have now come to an agreement on the technical specifications for the new category.

Round 2 of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship saw an epic battle for victory in each of the classes, with Toyota Gazoo Racing taking a 1-2 at the head of the 32 car field at the end of the 8 Hours of Portimão. The #8 Toyota GR010-Hybrid, driven by Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Kazuki Nakajima, took a last gasp win after being challenged by the #7 Toyota in the final 15 minutes of the race and a race long challenge by the #36 Alpine Elf Matmut A480-Gibson.

The #36 Alpine ELF Matmut A480 claimed the pole position for round two of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship at the 8 Hours of Portimao. Matthieu Vaxiviere topped the time sheets to secure the first overall WEC pole position for Alpine.
