Q&A: FIA F4 World Cup winner Jules Roussel
More motor sport history was made when Macau staged the inaugural FIA F4 World Cup last weekend. This is what the winner, 19-year-old Jules Roussel from France, had to say.

For a young driver, how important is the FIA F4 World Cup and the opportunity to race at Macau?
“We realised the importance just after the race when we win. We take big pleasure doing this race, it’s a big experience and there is the opportunity to learn a lot against the best in the world on the most challenging track, the best track that I really enjoy. You had a feeling all of the week that this was the first edition of this race, so to win this first race is quite amazing.”
To what extent can winning this race – or even just taking part – help your career going forward?
“I hope we are proving what we can do and maybe we can find some sponsors because we need to find some. We don’t have the budget now, so we need to search for it. This was my last opportunity of the season to prove it, I take it and I’m really happy. For the future, it’s not my decision so we will see.”

Mechanics and engineers from the FFSA Academy helped to run all the cars under one structure, which created the ultimate level playing field. What benefits did this bring?
“First of all, I want to say thanks to my engineer, he really helped me, and my mechanics. It’s an arrive and drive system and it was really great because we all have the same car. We know in motor sport there can be a difference between the teams, but this was not about the driver with the most money being with the best team. This was a chance to prove yourself on the most challenging track for an FIA World Cup. It was a good system to race.”
Looking back, how good was the Main Race from behind the wheel and how pleased were you with your performance?
“In French F4 this year we had some bad luck, but the pace was there, and we fight for it. I don’t know if I take the best start, but I take the opportunity of exploiting the start. My default this year was the start and the first lap, I am just improving on it, and I proved it again here, so I am quite happy. To win the biggest event of the year, I’m really grateful.”

What were the final laps like circulating behind the safety car knowing the victory was in your hands?
“There was no time to relax because I needed to prepare my mind, to keep my tyres at a good temperature in case I had to push again for one more lap. I only relaxed at the end of the last corner because if I crashed before then it would have been quite dramatic. I want to do Macau again.”
