Mercedes man sets last gasp flyer to top times in Macau

Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM Racing’s Raffaele Marciello snatched pole position away from the BMW of Augusto Farfus in the dying moments of qualifying for the FIA GT World Cup.

BMW Team Schnitzer’s Farfus looked to have secured the position after producing his own stellar effort, only for Marciello to incredibly lower the benchmark by more than half a second.

Maro Engel and Edoardo Mortara made it three GruppeM Mercedes in the top four, whilst the Manthey-Racing duo of Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor had to settle for fifth and sixth respectively.

Hear from the top three drivers in our exclusive interview below:

Bamber had previously set the fastest time during practice earlier in the day, but the ultimate pace wasn’t quite there for Porsche in qualifying.

Audi squads experienced a frustrating session with the R8 LMS trio of Robin Frijns, Christopher Haase and Dries Vanthoor ending up seventh, eighth and ninth.

Frijns was hoping to improve again late on but the Dutchman outbraked himself at Lisboa, nudging his Audi Sport Team WRT Speedstar machine into the barrier in the process.

Mathieu Jaminet’s Craft Bamboo Porsche rounded out the top ten.

The FIA GT World Cup Qualification Race will take place at 13:05 (local time) tomorrow and you catch all of the action live on fia.com or via the FIA’s Facebook page.
