FIA Senior Leadership Calls for Consumer-Driven Mobility During Visit to FIA Member ADAC, Europe’s Largest Mobility Club

02.05.25

In a powerful show of support for independent consumer testing and access to transparent information, senior leaders from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) — the federation for mobility organisations worldwide and the global governing body for motor sport — visited the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), Europe’s largest Mobility Club and a strategic FIA Member.

Accompanied by ADAC President Christian Reinicke and other high-level representatives, the FIA delegation — including FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA General Manager Alberto Villarreal and FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility Willem Groenewald — toured ADAC’s Headquarters in Munich, as well as its state-of-the-art Technical Test Centre in Landsberg am Lech and Mobility Test Centre in Penzing.

This landmark event highlighted how ADAC’s independent, science-based testing empowers consumers with reliable, data-driven insights — helping them make safer and more sustainable purchase decisions.

The ISO 9001 certified ADAC Technical Test Centre in Landsberg is one of Europe’s premier hubs for vehicle safety and environmental performance testing. Accredited for Euro NCAP crash testing and supporting Global NCAP and Latin NCAP programmes, the centre plays a critical role in advancing road safety. It also partners with Green NCAP to conduct emissions and energy efficiency testing, both in the lab and in real-world conditions.

“At the FIA, our mission is to lead the way towards a safer, more sustainable and accessible future for all road users. The work being done by our Member ADAC in its test centres is not just about technology — it's about empowering road users with the knowledge they need to make the best choices possible in an increasingly complex mobility landscape,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

The delegation also visited Penzing, where ADAC has transformed part of a former air base into a cutting-edge Mobility Test Centre. Since its opening in 2022, the facility has focused on new and emerging technologies, such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), crash prevention, autonomous mobility, and electric vehicles. Special attention is given to real-world crash scenarios with vulnerable road users, like cyclists and pedestrians, shaping safety standards and legislation in Germany and Europe.

FIA General Manager Alberto Villarreal said, “Safety and sustainability must go hand in hand to shape the vehicles of today and beyond, while also meeting our global challenges. Robust and independent testing is essential to ensure that new technologies achieve this goal while ensuring the protection of all road users.”

During their visit, the FIA Delegation watched live tests being performed, from child-seat crash evaluations to pedestrian-impact simulations, highlighting  the rigour and reproducibility of ADAC’s protocols. These tests contribute to the globally trusted NCAP “star” ratings that guide millions of consumers in making safer and more sustainable choices.

FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility Willem Groenewald said, "The opportunities for tomorrow’s mobility require closer collaboration to achieve smarter, safer and cleaner vehicles, along with a consumer first approach that prioritises clear and effective information. Through its advanced testing, ADAC is at the cutting edge to achieve that goal, ensuring that the interests of road users are always at the heart of technological progress.”

ADAC President Christian Reinicke said, “The ADAC test engineers at the test and technology centre in Landsberg am Lech and at the new mobility test centre in Penzing carry out well over 1,000 tests every year. Consumers need guidance, especially when it comes to new topics: electromobility, new vehicles, alternative fuels, assistance systems and autonomous driving functions. This is consumer protection in action — and this expertise also enables us to take a stand and, together with our partners in the FIA, to contribute to political consultations as a representative of our members' interests.”
