The 5th meeting of the Safer City Streets network took place on 10-11 April and was hosted by the city of Buenos Aires, which co-chairs the network together with the city of Lisbon.

The meeting was attended by over 90 participants.

Twenty cities were represented: Addis Ababa, Bogota, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Fortaleza, Guadalajara, Guatemala, La Paz, Lanús, Leon, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Mendoza, Mexico City, Neuquén, Santiago, Santo Domingo and Sao Paulo.

The meeting was hosted by Juanjo Mendez, Secretary of Transportation, and opened by Paula Bisiau, Undersecretary of Sustainable Mobility, Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. It provided a much appreciated opportunity for exchange of experience in implementing safer streets. Common issues in accommodating electric micro-mobility were discussed, numerous examples of successful improvements to street design were presented from across the Latin America, with striking use of data on the success of speed reductions on pilot corridors to build public support for extended programs to cut fatalities on Bogota’s roads.

The first results of the networks benchmarking data to compare deaths and serious injuries across cities on a like-to-like basis were presented https://www.fia.com/news/fia-itf-safer-city-streets-publishes-benchmark-urban-road-safetyand state of the art research and investment in improved bus safety in London was discussed to cite just a few examples. And a recurrent theme was integration of road safety into other public policy agendas, including climate change, pollution mitigation and equitable access; creating safer street environments is essential to the potential contributions of walking, cycling and public transport to these agendas.

Two side events were organized at the occasion of the Safer City Streets Meeting: the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Latin American Regional Meeting on Road Safety and Urban Mobility and a Workshop organized by the Union for Electric Mobility (UEMI), which focused on safe and low-carbon urban mobility.

The next meeting of the Safer City Streets network will be hosted by the city of Lisbon on 16-18 October 2019.
