FIA GT World Cup – Debutant fastest in Macau GT practice

17.11.17

Macau debutant Robin Frijns (Audi Sport Team  WRT R8LMS) has set fastest time in the second practice session for the FIA GT World Cup

His time of 2min 18.507seconds is 0.4secs faster than the fastest time set in the first session of practice by inaugural FIA GT World Cup winner Maro Engel ( Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM GT3).

But it was fellow debutant Markus Pommer (Aust Motorsport Audi R8) who created the biggest sensation of the half hour warm up for this afternoon’s all important qualifying session.

With the session coming to a close Pommer momentarily claimed the fastest lap with 2min18.879 and then spun at more than 250kmh on Mandarin Bend – the corner which claimed FIA GT Cup winner Laurens Vanthoor last year.

Instead of flipping as did Vanthoor, Pommer’s Audi spun twice down the long straight ,marginally missing the wall.

Pommer still claimed third fastest in the session behind Frijns and Augusto Farfus ( BMW Team Schnitzer M6) , 2min18.850.

The top three cars were under yesterday’s fastest lap in a session in which most teams concentrated on set up for qualifying .

Thirteen cars improved their first session times.

FIA GT World Cup qualifying is over 30 minutes later on Day Two of the Macau GP meeting.
