ABOUT THE AREA
The Canton of Valais is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation and is composed of thirteen districts with the capital, and largest city is Sion.
Sion has a population of approximately 35,000 people and has several landmarks, including the Basilique de Valère and the Château de Tourbillon.
Sion is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe. The alluvial fan of the river Sionne, the rocky slopes above the river and, to a lesser extent, Valeria and Tourbillon hills have been settled nearly continuously since antiquity. The oldest trace of human settlement comes from 6200 BC during the late Mesolithic period.
