The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, has awarded three-star FIA Road Safety Index ratings to Busitalia-società di Trenitalia (Gruppo FS) and Nestlé Italia, recognising their commitment to making journeys safer for their employees and all road users. 

The FIA Road Safety Index provides organisations with a data-driven methodology to assess, manage, report and improve their road safety footprint, much like a carbon footprint. Using the Index, organisations can identify where road safety risks lie and what they can do to address them.  

A three-star rating recognises an organisation’s commitment and its ability to understand and manage these risks, laying the foundation for continued improvement towards the newly launched highest 5-star FIA Road Safety Index rating. 

Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism, said: “Road safety requires sustained action, not one-off commitments. By measuring their road safety footprint, organisations can make better-informed decisions, track their progress and keep improving. Busitalia and Nestlé Italia have reached an important milestone on that journey, and we look forward to seeing them build on this foundation and continue raising their ambition to save lives on the road.” 

Busitalia-società di Trenitalia (Gruppo FS)’s rating recognises its approach to managing road safety across an extensive transport network, with more than 3,000 employees and 2,000 buses travelling 111 million kilometres each year. This includes investment in safer vehicles equipped with technologies such as blind-spot detection, emergency braking, 360° camera systems and continuous speed monitoring. 

Safety requirements and rest periods are respected even when they affect journey times, reflecting an approach that puts safety first. This is backed by strong enforcement of its policies on alcohol and drug use, alongside the monitoring of road incidents involving employees, contractors and other road users.

Nestlé Italia has set a long-term ambition of zero crashes across a fleet of more than 700 vehicles travelling over 19 million kilometres each year, making road safety part of its everyday decisions and ways of working 

Its approach includes rigorously applied policies on alcohol, drugs, mobile phone use and driver rest, as well as using EuroNCAP safety standards for choosing the vehicles of its fleet. Nestlé Italia also tracks and analyses road incidents involving third-party transport providers, extending its focus on road safety beyond its own fleet.

Through the FIA Road Safety Index, the FIA is using its global reach to drive action at scale, encouraging more organisations across the public and private sectors to measure and manage road safety and take concrete steps to help reduce deaths and injuries on roads worldwide.
