Neuroinformatics join the fight for Road Safety: #Tech4RoadSafety in Davos

25.01.18

Yesterday in Davos, FIA President Jean Todt and CEO of EMOTIV Tan Le revealed the innovative #Tech4RoadSafety experience developed in partnership with the Institut du Cerveau et de la Moelle Epinière represented by Head of Research and Technology Development Alexis Génin. Together they welcomed 2016 FIA Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg for a test in the presence of UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčák and UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova

During the test, Nico Rosberg's brainwaves were recorded and monitored thanks to EMOTIV's portable neuroinformatics solutions while he was using an FIA virtual reality driving simulator reproducing real-life driving conditions as well as difficulties and obstacles drivers often face on the road. The recorded videos were broadcast and analysed during the event. Attendees could visualise Nico Rosberg’s brain activity in 3D thanks to translational machine learning algorithms. Neuroscientific and behavioral explanations allowed the participants to better understand how distractions and altered perception affect the drivers' behaviour and reaction time on the road, and thus put their life at risk.

By combining virtual reality with real-time mobile neuroinformatics, the experience shows how neurosciences and brain sensing technologies can provide valuable information and measures on the driver’s fluctuation of attention at the wheel and help develop more efficient technological innovations to improve road safety.

Attendees to the 2018 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos are invited to experience FIA/EMOTIV #Tech4RoadSafety innovation at the Hub Culture Pavilion & Studio (Promenade 93, Davos Platz) until 26 January.
