On 30 November, the Hong Kong Automobile Association (HKAA) hosted the Smart Cities Forum as a pre-event to the Hong Kong ePrix.

Gathering experts from the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Bureau, Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, FIA, Formula E partners, academia and research institutes, the Forum focused on how new forms of mobility have paved a way for cleaner, safer and more sustainable mobility solutions in cities, and particularly in Hong Kong.

“As the name of the championship denotes, the “E” element is very significant and has been the subject matter of modern technologies as part of a sustainable environmental policy adopted around the globe. It is delightful, therefore, to see the social benefit a motor sport event can bring to us, reinforcing the synergies between Sports and Mobility,” said Mr Kenneth Ng, President of HKAA.

Dr David Chung Wai-Keung JP, the Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region joined the Forum as the opening guest, “When we discuss Smart Cities initiatives and Smart Mobility in Hong Kong, we always focus on the needs of our citizens to develop a solution which is both inclusive and sustainable. The Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint will be released around Christmas.”

Ms Helene Speight, HR Director of Formula E Championship added, “The racing in city centre stages the innovative technologies. Combining Formula E and Smart Cities will help us to engage a wider audience to the discussion of sustainability in an interesting way. In Formula E, we are committed to impact cities positively.”

Other speakers discussed the technologies and innovations that make Smart Mobility a reality in Hong Kong. Coming from Enel, one of the world’s leading energy companies and founding partner of FIA Smart Cities, Mr Christopher Regan shared one of Smart Cities’ fundamental concepts: people-oriented technological advancement: “Experts are not doing technology for the sake of technology, they are developing technology which can be used by people who are living in the real world.”
