F3 - Ticktum and Ahmed secure pole positions

02.06.18

Race of Hungary - Qualifying 2

Daniel Ticktum (Motopark) keeps on riding on the waves of success at the 4.381 kilometres long Hungaroring. Having won the first FIA Formula 3 European Championship race at the Grand Prix track near Budapest after starting from first place on the grid, he also claimed pole position for the second race. Enaam Ahmed (Hitech Bullfrog GP), Guanyu Zhou (PREMA Theodore Racing) and Marcus Armstrong (PREMA Theodore Racing) followed in second to fourth place. In the ranking of the second-fastest laps, used to determine the starting grid positions for the third race of the weekend, the order is Ahmed from Ticktum, Armstrong and Jehan Daruvala (Carlin).

Starting grid race two
At the start of the 20 minutes’ qualifying session, Mick Schumacher (PREMA Theodore Racing, 1m35.353s) initially topped the timing screens, but he didn’t manage to hold on to this position. Towards the halfway point, Daniel Ticktum (1m34.937s) moved up into first place, only to be outpaced by Schumacher again. Robert Shvartzman (PREMA Theodore Racing, 1m35.270s), Marcus Armstrong (1m35.048s) and Enaam Ahmed (1m34.960s) went ahead of the Brit, who was then able to increase his pace on his final lap. He eventually was classifed first from Ahmed, Guanyu Zhou (1m34.993s) and Armstrong.

Alex Palou (Hitech Bullfrog GP, 1m35.122s), Jehan Daruvala (1m35.218s), Shvartzman, Ben Hingeley (Hitech Bullfrog GP, 1m35.327s), Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin, 1m35.333s) and Fabio Scherer (Motopark, 1m35.341s) rounded out the top ten.

Starting grid race three
In the ranking of the second-fastest lap, Ahmed (1m34.967s) came out on top from his rival Ticktum (1m34.999s). Armstrong (1m35.234s) was classified third from Daruvala (1m35.249s), Zhou (1m35.288s), Shvartzman (1m35.329s), Palou (1m35.422s), Jüri Vips (Motopark, 1m35.445s), Schumacher (1m35.542s) and Habsburg (1m35.603s).

Daniel Ticktum (Motopark): “My third pole position this season, I am very happy with that. Of course, it is a good position to be in, but now, I have to focus on the two race starts tomorrow and also on not making any mistakes in the following laps. It is only then that points are awarded, not after qualifying.”

Enaam Ahmed (Hitech Bullfrog GP): “Starting from pole position for the third race here is a very good feeling. In second qualifying, the car was like I want it, the balance not having been perfect yesterday. Furthermore, I have made some changes to my driving style, which also turned out to be good. I am also happy with second place on the grid for race two.”
