F1- Verstappen takes Austin Sprint win as both McLaren retire

18.10.25

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen took his third consecutive Austin Sprint win, beating Mercedes’ George Russell and Williams’ Carlos Sainz to the flag as McLaren title contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were knocked out of the race in a Turn 1 collision at the start.

When the lights went out, Verstappen reacted quickest and he powered up the hill ahead of McLaren’s Norris and Oscar Piastro who were battling over second place. Norris took a wide line through Turn 1, which led to Piastri trying to dive inside to attack. However, Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg, who was being squeezed by Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was there and with nowhere to go he collided with Piastri. The Australian’s car was spun round and Norris and Alonso were taken out in the chaos.

The Safety Car was immediately deployed and Verstappen settled in the lead ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, Williams’ Carlos Sainz, the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the second Williams of Alex Albon, and in seventh place, Red Bull Racing’s Yuki Tsunoda who powered up the inside from P18 at the start and then managed to tiptoe through the chaos and into the top 10 despite briefly collecting Hülkenberg’s front wing on his way through. Haas’ Oliver Bearman also profited from the Turn 1 incident and he climbed from P16 on the grid to the final points position as the field cross the line to start the second lap.

When the debris was eventually cleared, Verstappen controlled the restart well to keep Russell and Sainz at bay.

On lap 8 Russell got within DTS range on the long back straight and as he approached the Turn 12, he launched a move on the inside. He appeared to lock up, however, and both he and Verstappen were forced off track. The Dutchman rejoined ahead of the Briton but there was no action from race control who deemed Russell’s move too ambitious.

There was as change in the order behind the leaders, with Hamilton muscling his way past his team-mate to snatch fourth place behind Sainz, who was now almost three seconds behind Russell.

At the start of lap 16, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll launched a long-range attack on Haas’ Esteban Ocon as the Frenchman took a wide line through Turn 1. The Canadian dived down the inside, went too deep and smashed into the side of Ocon’s car.

The Safety Car was once again deployed and this time it stayed on track until just before the chequered flag, leaving Verstappen to power to the finish line ahead of Russell and Sainz.

Hamilton and Leclerc held on to fourth and fifth respectively ahead of Albon and Tsunoda.

However, Bearman missed out on the final point when he received a 10-second time penalty for going off track and gaining an advantage as he tussled with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli who took P8 at the flag.
