F1 - Norris wins dramatic Dutch Grand Prix ahead of Antonelli and Russell as Verstappen crashes

23.08.26

Lando Norris claimed his second consecutive victory of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 season with a composed drive at the Dutch Grand Prix, overcoming changing conditions, an early red flag and late strategic pressure to win at Zandvoort ahead of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.

The race began amid uncertainty after rain in the build-up, although the track had dried sufficiently for the majority of the field to start on slick tyres. Norris made a clean getaway from pole position, while Antonelli immediately moved ahead of Mercedes team-mate Russell for second.

The opening lap was then brought to a dramatic halt. Home favourite Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull after lost control in the final corner, spinning into the barriers and scattering debris across the circuit. The incident triggered a red flag, ending the Dutch driver’s race before he had completed a lap. Gabriel Bortoleto also spun in the aftermath but avoided damage.

There was further drama before the restart when Oliver Bearman suffered a technical problem on the way to the grid. Once racing resumed, Antonelli made an excellent launch from the standing restart to sweep past Norris into the lead at Turn 1, while Oscar Piastri moved ahead of Russell for third.

Antonelli initially built a useful advantage at the front, but Norris remained within range as the race developed into a strategic contest. Russell, struggling with the balance of his Mercedes, came under sustained pressure from the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, while a slow pit stop for Piastri dropped the McLaren driver behind Russell.

The order continued to evolve through the middle phase of the race. Leclerc eventually passed Piastri around the outside at Turn 3 on lap 34, with Hamilton following him through shortly afterwards. At the front, however, Antonelli maintained control until the leaders entered their second round of pit stops.

Norris emerged from his final stop more than five seconds behind Antonelli but quickly reduced the deficit as the Mercedes driver began to struggle with his rear tyres. On lap 54, the reigning World Champion made a decisive move around the outside of Turn 1 to take second from Antonelli before passing Hamilton later in the lap to regain the lead.

A Virtual Safety Car following Esteban Ocon’s retirement then added another strategic twist. Antonelli and Hamilton took the opportunity to fit fresh soft tyres, while Norris and Russell remained on their hard compounds. Antonelli soon began closing on Russell, and Mercedes eventually instructed the pair to swap positions, promoting the Italian back to second.

Despite the advantage of fresher rubber, Antonelli was unable to threaten Norris, who controlled the closing stages to take the chequered flag after 72 laps in a time of 2:04:44.859. Antonelli finished 11.536 seconds behind, with Russell completing the podium, just ahead of the charging Hamilton.

Hamilton took fourth for Ferrari, with team-mate Leclerc fifth and Piastri sixth. Liam Lawson finished seventh despite receiving a 10-second penalty, while Nico Hülkenberg scored points for Audi in eighth. Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.

Norris’ victory marked his second consecutive Grand Prix success and his second win of the season. Antonelli’s second place nevertheless strengthens his position at the head of the Drivers’ Championship, with the Mercedes driver leaving Zandvoort holding a 59-point advantage over Russell and Hamilton.
