F1 – Norris takes dominant win in Mexico City ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen to seize championship lead

27.10.25

McLaren’s Lando Norris took a dominant victory in the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen by more than 30 seconds. The win, allied to team-mate Oscar Piastri’s fifth-place finish, means Norris takes the lead in the Drivers’ standings, a single point ahead of Piastri.

Norris got away well from pole at the start and but on the long run to Turn 1 he was almost reeled in by the Ferraris of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton and by the hard-charging Verstappen. As the quarter went almost four-wide into the braking zone for Turn 1, Leclerc moved left to avoid Hamilton. Verstappen was forced onto the grass and then had to cut the opening chicane. As Norris turned in, Leclerc also went wide on the right and when all four popped out onto the run to Turn 4, Lecler was ahead of Norris, Hamilton and Verstappen.

Leclerc soon ceded the lead back to Norris, but behind them Verstappen and Hamilton were tussling for third place. They clashed in Turn 4, with Hamilton going off track and rejoining well ahead of the Red Bull driver and then banged wheels in Turn 1.

Hamilton again went off track and as Verstappen recovered and the following George Russell went wide on the left, Haas’ Ollie Bearman somehow slipped through to steal third place.

With the chaos at last subsiding and the first stint beginning to properly get underway, the race stewards at last has time to rule on the incidents. Verstappen was absolved of any blame for the Turn 1 incident and an off-track moment in Turn 3, but Hamilton was hit with a 10-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

At the front, Norris quickly pulled away and by lap 23 the Briton had carved out a 10.5-second advantage over Leclerc, with Bearman 11 seconds further back in third, while Verstappen was fourth ahead of Russell.

The drivers who had started on Softs now began to run out of rubber and as Hamilton, Russell, Bearman, and eventually Leclerc pitted, Max climbed to P2. Norris made his stop at the end of lap 34 and four laps later Verstappen headed in for his pit stop. The Red BUll driver fitted a set of Soft tyres and resumed in eighth place, behind Hamilton.

Ahead, Piastri was embroiled in a three-way battle for four fourth with P5 man Russell and Antonelli. Rusell was allowed to pass his team-mate to try and chase down Bearman but as the trio cycled through a second pit stop phase it became clear that it was Piastri who had the pace and after getting by Antonelli he closed in on Russell and set off after Bearman.

With the trio dropping back after second stops, Verstappen was boosted to third and he began to close in on Leclerc. Lapping almost a second quicker, the gap quickly began to dissolve and with 10 laps left a 12-second gap had been cut to under five. On lap 70 Verstappen he closed right up to the Ferrari driver, but just as the Dutchman prepared to attack, Williams’ Carlos Sainz stopped in the stadium section. Yellow flags were displayed and soon after VSC was deployed.

With the race neutralised until the closing seconds, Leclerc was able to hold on and after Norris cruised to his sixth win of the season, the Ferrari driver took second place ahead of Verstappen. The VSC also saved Bearman who took a career best fourth place ahead of Piastri. Sixth place went to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, with Russell in seventh at the flag. Hamilton ended the race in P8 ahead of the second Haas of Esteban Ocon and the final point went to Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
