EHSRC - Round 3 - 11th Rally de Asturias Historico - Day 1

At the end of the opening day of the Rally de Asturias Historico only four tenths of a second separates the no6 Porsche 911 SC of Austrians Karl Wagner / Gerda Zauner (Category 3) and the no4 Ford Sierra Cosworth 4×4 of Spaniards Daniel Alonso / Candido Carrera (Category 4).

The current overall championship leaders Mats Myrsell and Esko Junttila in the no1 Ford Sierra Cosworth 4×4 (Category 4) are currently lying in third overall and second in class, 28.6 seconds behind the leading Porsche.

The second placed car in Category 3 is the no9 Porsche 911 SC of Finland’s Pentti Veikkanen and Timo Jaakkola in 7th overall and 1m47s behind the no6 Porsche at the head of the field.

Category 2 is being led by the no8 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0 of Anders and Ingrid Johnsen, the Swedes finishing the day in 4th overall, 36.1 seconds behind the leaders.  The second placed car in class is another Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0, the no10 Porsche of Italians Paolo Pasutti and Giovani Battista in 9th overall and 1m42s behind the Johnsen’s Porsche.

The Category 1 battle is led by the no19 Ford Escort Twin Cam of British couple Ernie and Karen Graham, who are lying 11th overall at the end of the first day.  They hold a 42 second advantage over the second placed car in the class, the no Ford Escort Twin Cam of Heiko Dlugos and Tim Rauber.

Round 2 winners «Lucky» and Fabrizia Pons (Lancia Delta Integrale) began the day well but on Special Stage 2 (Rey Silo Hotel) the Lancia went off the road and rolled into a field.  The Italian crew were both unharmed in the accident and the Key Sport Engineering team is already working to repair the car ahead of tomorrow’s restart in Pravia.

The Past Racing Team had to change the turbo of Daniel Alonso’s Ford Sierra, allowing the Spanish crew to continue, setting the best time on SS3 and finishing the end of the day in second position overall.

Italians «Zippo» and Luca Culasso also suffered technical issues on the opening stage of the day, with the gearbox of the no7 Audi Quattro during SS1. The Italians were able to reach the finish line but deciding to head to service to allow the team to work on the cars and get it back in the fight on Day 2 of the rally.

Day 2 of the Rally de Asturias Historico will feature seven special stages with the first stage ‘Pravia’ beginning at 11h18 CET on Saturday 25 May.
