WEC - What the Drivers Said After Qualifying

14.08.20

After the two twenty minute qualifying sessions ahead of the Total 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the pole position drivers spoke about their qualifying runs in the briefing room.

Gustavo Menezes – no1 Rebellion Racing Rebellion R13-Gibson – LMP1

“It’s been a tough weekend even though on paper it looks perfect. We’ve been struggling with the balance of the car and we knew we would need a big step. So we made quite a few changes with the car before qualifying and it was like ‘wow’ the car is here.  Because we have the rear wheel drive system, not the all wheel drive, we struggled to get ultimate temperature on the first laps, so I didn’t get to maximise the tyres.  But for the next lap the pace stepped up quite a good amount and I was able to put down a good lap.
“I have to say that Norman is the one who did an incredible job to continue on tyres and to do what he did.  I am proud to be in the same car as him.”

Phil Hanson – no22 United Autosports Oreca 07-Gibson – LMP2

“This gives us an extra confidence boost, especially at Spa where you want to be starting on pole. La Source has a lot of history of carnage so with the championship in mind we want to be starting with the least risk ahead of us.  So, yes, it was quite crucial for us to be on pole today.”

Alex Lynn – no97 Aston Martin Racing Aston Martin Vantage – LMGTE Pro

“To be fair my qualifying lap wasn’t the crucial one, I think it was Max’s lap that got us into this position. We had seen a lot of track limits taking lots of laps away from our rivals and we also fell victim to that, so from my side I just tried to drive a clean lap with no mistakes and maximise what I could within the two minutes.”

Matt Campbell – no77 Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR – LMGTE Am

“When you look at the whole session it went smoothly.  Obviously, we both went very fast and I’m happy with my lap time, which was pretty cool for our overall qualifying.  I think we’ve made some pretty good changes to the car and made some good steps to get it to be this quick.  I think this puts us in a good position for tomorrow.”
