Kristoffersson conquers Höljes to reclaim championship lead with home victory
Johan Kristoffersson returned to the top step of the podium in front of his home crowd on Sunday, producing a superb recovery drive to win the Euro RX of Sweden after one of the most dramatic weekends of the 2026 FIA European Rallycross Championship season.

Having overcome Saturday's costly black flag to climb back into contention, the eight-time World Champion completed a remarkable turnaround to lead home a KMS one-two ahead of Ole Christian Veiby. Home favourite Casper Jansson completed an all-Scandinavian podium with the first FIA European Rallycross Championship podium of his career, delighting the ecstatic Höljes crowds.
Kristoffersson's day began in treacherous conditions as heavy rain swept across the circuit for Qualifying 4, dramatically reducing visibility and making every lap a test of survival. A strong drive ensured he remained firmly in the fight before he underlined his intentions by comfortably winning Quarter-Final 3. The Swede carried that momentum into the Semi-Final, where he again controlled proceedings to secure pole position for the Final.
From there, Kristoffersson produced one of his trademark performances. As differing joker strategies unfolded, Kristoffersson remained in complete control. Having finally found the consistent starts KMS had been searching for all weekend, the Swede never relinquished the lead, expertly managing the race to secure a hugely popular home victory. The result also returns him to the top of the championship standings heading into Round 4.
Veiby enjoyed an equally impressive recovery after a frustrating weekend in Hungary. The Norwegian was amongst the very few drivers who caught dry conditions in Qualifying 4, allowing him to finish the session in first place, before progressing through the Quarter-Final to finish behind Peter Hedström. A masterful drive in the Semi-Final saw him finish second behind Jansson to book his place on the second row of the Final, where his sublime pace after his early joker secured another one-two finish for KMS.
Jansson was one of the standout performers of the weekend and finally converted his pace into the result it deserved. After progressing through the Quarter-Final, the Swede produced one of Sunday's defining moments in the Semi-Final, executing a brilliant move at the exit of the joker lap of the race to snatch victory ahead of Veiby and Andreas Bakkerud. That confidence carried into the Final, where the home favourite resisted relentless pressure to secure a hugely popular first FIA European Rallycross Championship podium in front of family, friends and the passionate Höljes crowd.
However, one of the biggest talking points of the day came before the Semi-Finals had even begun. Overnight leader Patrick O'Donovan arrived at Sunday's Quarter-Final stage on the front row after a remarkably consistent Saturday, but his weekend unravelled when he finished fourth. With only the top three progressing, the Irishman was sensationally eliminated, opening the door for Kristoffersson and the rest of the field to fight for victory.
Johan Kristoffersson, Kristoffersson Motorsport, said: “It's definitely been a huge challenge this weekend. We're so happy that the launches are a little bit better - more consistent in the semi-final and the final, being able to take the starts. Very happy with the progress we've made and a really big thanks to the team who has worked so hard to achieve more consistent starts. We're still not as good as the best ones, but we're getting closer at least, so that's very promising.”
Ole Christian Veiby, Kristoffersson Motorsport, said: “I'm super relieved that we managed to fight back with another KMS one-two. There have been some brilliant fights today - both with Andreas [Bakkerud] and also Casper Jansson, who's done a really good job this weekend. It's been a pleasure to drive here in Höljes again, and the Final was also super cool. It's been great to be fight at the front again and much needed result after our performance in Hungary.”
Casper Jansson, JRS, said: “To be on my first podium in the FIA European Rallycross Championship at my home track - with all of my family and friends here - feels incredible. We already had good pace at the end of Hungary, so we knew we were quick, we just needed to keep everything together consistently - and we finally did it in the Final. I think winning the Semi-Final was definitely a key moment for my weekend, and what really made a difference.”
With Kristoffersson back on the top step, Veiby returning to the podium and Jansson celebrating a career-first FIA European Rallycross Championship podium on home soil, the title fight has taken another dramatic twist. Kristoffersson's victory sees him regain the championship lead, but with several drivers still firmly in contention, the battle is far from over. Attention now turns to Mondello Park in Ireland on 18-19 July. Following the drama of Höljes, the Irish round promises another pivotal weekend in the race for the 2026 Euro RX1 crown.
