02.11.15
Formula E has become the first championship promoter to be awarded with Achievement of Excellence, the top-level award in the FIA Institute’s Sustainability programme
The Institute determined that Formula E had achieved a high degree of environmental

Based on a recent audit of Formula E’s environmental management system (EMS), the Institute awarded the series organisers the highest level of accreditation for this initiative.

The Institute determined that Formula E had achieved a high degree of environmental  performance and demonstrated an impressive commitment to sustainability, with clear targets laid out for future improvements. Formula E’s EMS was found to be consistent with the championship’s expressed strategy regarding the long-term outcome as the first fully-electric motorsport series in the world.

The commitment shown by Formula E’s senior management, as well as those responsible for the EMS, particularly impressed the Institute. This was evident through the implementation of their environmental policy and its comprehensive life cycle assessment report of the inaugural season.

Formula E has also announced it is forming a Sustainability Committee, which will be chaired by actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The new body will focus on urban mobility and promoting the mass use of electric vehicles. The Committee will meet to discuss ways of addressing the world’s most pressing environmental issues and how to drive greater social mobility in the way major corporations do business.

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said: “I’m delighted that Formula E has become the first championship promoter to be awarded ‘Achievement of Excellence’ in the FIA Institute’s Sustainability programme. This is fully in keeping with our aims and commitment to promoting sustainable mobility, which can be seen by electric racing taking place in some of the world’s leading cities.”

Garry Connelly, Deputy President of the FIA Institute, said: “I would like to congratulate Formula E on their excellent work in this area. I was particularly impressed by the clear commitment of the senior Formula E management towards environmental issues, which was evident throughout the accreditation application process.”
