Girls on Track Karting Challenge Porto Portugal

Today, Porto hosted the first stage of The Girls On Track karting challenge. The event, organised by national sporting association (FPAK), was a great success. 130 young girls aged from 13 to 18 years came and tried the slalom.

FPAK President, Mr Fernando Manuel Neiva Machado Amorim, was joined by a number of Portuguese personalities, including Tiago Monteiro, the famous Portuguese racing driver, representing  young talented karting female driver: Miss Mariana Sousa Machado, the national Karting Champion, aged 13 years. The event was also visited by officials from Porto City, who have played a key role in the recruitment of girls from local schools.

The Girls On Track karting challenge, co-funded by the EU Erasmus + programme, aims to develop and promote the presence of young women in motorsport at a grassroots level, using the affordable format of karting slalom.

The FIA is delighted with this very positive inaugural event and is confident that the next Karting slalom rounds organised in the seven other European partner countries will attract thousands of girls, and potentially identify the next generation of female champions.

This new project is consistent with the Women In Motorsport Commission’s aim of creating a culture which facilitates the participation of women in all aspects of motor sport.
