FIA Joins Forces with Global Stakeholders at the Un Decade of Sustainable Transport Multi-Stakeholder Webinar

26.11.24

Today, on World Sustainable Transport Day, the FIA actively participated in the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport Multi-Stakeholder Webinar, a crucial event focused on advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient transport systems worldwide.

Hosted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the webinar marked a significant step in the global effort to align transport systems with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A Global Consultation for Inclusive Development

The webinar forms part of the broader Global Online Stakeholder Consultation on the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport. Open from November 2024 to January 2025, it was launched in response to the General Assembly Resolution A/78/148, which called for the creation of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035), the development of an Implementation Plan to guide coordinated global action and stronger connections between all modes of transport —land, air, sea — to support sustainable development.

The consultation aligns with the overarching goals of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, emphasising the importance of multilateral collaboration in developing systems that address climate change, economic development, and social inclusion.

It seeks to gather input, actionable ideas and innovative solutions from governments, international organisations, private-sector actors, and civil society to ensure the Implementation Plan of the Decade reflects diverse needs and priorities and embodies a comprehensive and inclusive approach to sustainable mobility.

Acting as a roadmap for achieving significant milestones in transport sustainability over the next decade, the Implementation Plan will build on prior UN commitments, including the outcomes of the Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference and the SDG targets directly related to transport, such as promoting energy efficiency, fostering resilience, and enhancing accessibility for underserved communities.

The FIA’s Role in Driving Sustainable Transport

The FIA’s presence at the webinar underscored its commitment to leading innovation and collaboration in sustainable transport.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted the Federation’s role in advancing global mobility solutions, stating: "Sustainable transport is more than a necessity — it is a responsibility. By strengthening the links between all modes of transport, we can unlock synergies that drive innovation, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship. The FIA is proud to contribute to this global mission."

Representing the FIA on the expert panel, Chief Development Officer Habib Turki outlined how motorsport and mobility can drive progress forward. He said: "The FIA is proud to contribute to the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport by leveraging motorsport as a global laboratory for innovation and sustainable solutions. By fostering partnerships, advancing green technologies, and promoting safety, we aim to bridge the gap between sport, mobility, and development."

Looking Ahead

As the world prepares for the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, the FIA and its Members are ready to collaborate with global partners to advance sustainable innovation, promote safety, and ensure inclusive access to mobility. The Global Online Stakeholder Consultation provides an opportunity for all voices to shape the Implementation Plan and ensure a decade of impactful action.
