FIA Homologates updated layout for 2023 FIA Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix

27.02.23

Track changes approved following track inspection - Final chicane will not be used from 2023

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will feature a different configuration for the 2023 FIA Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, with the FIA having homologated the track both with and without the chicane in the final sector.

In order to carry out this important change that will improve the safety of the track, the Circuit has followed the FIA instructions by installing new TECPRO barriers in the last two turns. Stuart Robertson, Head of Circuit and Rally Safety at the FIA, and Niels Wittich, Formula 1 Race Director and Safety Delegate, were in charge of approving this modification during their inspection of the track at the end of January, which also included the approval of a new much wider run-off area at Turn 1.

Following this homologation, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya other motor racing competitions that use the Grand Prix layout will have the choice between the two layouts.
