‘The City of Lights’ will host round eight of the 2018/2019 championship - Preview

The battle for the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship returns to the streets of the French capital this weekend (27 April) for the series’ fourth visit to the iconic city. The Paris E-Prix, held at the seventh arrondissement’s Les Invalides district, will be round eight of the current campaign.

The 1.92 km long circuit with 14 narrow and twisty turns offers a tough challenge for the drivers. It goes clock-wise around the imposing Hotel National des Invalides, housing the Musee de l’Armee and the tomb of Napoleon. The pit lane is located along the Esplanade des Invalides. The tight confines of the city streets in the heart of Paris can make overtaking difficult, hence qualifying will be even more crucial.

Last time out

Last year Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne took pole position ahead of Sam Bird by nearly three tenths of a second, with his TECHEETAH team-mate Andre Lotterer coming third in qualifying. In front of a huge Parisian crowd, home-hero Vergne then put in a near-perfect performance during the race, managing a lights to flag victory. With that result he extended his lead in the standings and went on to win the 2017/18 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

Current standings

Past the half way point of the 2018/2019 season, competition in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship remains as fierce as ever. Seven different winners from as many rounds mean that predictions for Paris are difficult. Jérôme d'Ambrosio is currently leading the standings, but with the top nine drives only separated by a mere 13 points the title fight is still wide open. Andre Lotterer, who at the moment is third in the drivers’ championship standings, is the only driver in the top five without a race win to his name. With his TECHEETAH team-mate winning the Paris edition last year, Lotterer will hope that his team repeats that performance and makes it his turn to be on the top step of the podium. The good results for TECHEETAH in Sanya and Rome also mean that the team is currently leading the ABB FIA Formula E Championship teams’ standing, closely followed by Envision Virgin Racing and Mahindra Racing respectively in second and third position.

With the stunning buildings of Les Invalides and the world-renowned Eiffel Tower serving as the backdrop, the Paris E-Prix represents one of the highlights of the season. Add to this the significance of Paris on the global stage as a champion of new mobility and environmental action, and it makes for one of the best examples of Formula E’s dual mission to bring motor sport to high profile city centre locations and raise awareness of electric vehicle technologies.
