2020 Round 5 post-Race 1 press conference

FIA Formula 3: Hello and welcome to the press conference with the top three finishers in Race 1 of this weekend's FIA Formula 3 Championship round here at Silverstone. We are joined by race winner Logan Sargeant for PREMA Racing, in second place is Jake Hughes for HWA RACELAB, and third is Liam Lawson for Hitech Grand Prix. Logan, congratulations. Your first win of the season and your first win in FIA Formula 3. Just how does that feel?

Logan Sargeant: It feels, honestly, overdue. I think we've had so much potential so far this year and we just haven't put it all together. Today we were able to do that.

FIA Formula 3: It looked like you had it under control throughout. Is that how it felt inside the car, or was it a little bit more stressful?

Logan: You still have to predict what's going to happen with the tyres, keep them under control. I know that the two boys sitting next to me are quick, so it wasn't easy. I just had to keep my head down, stay within myself and it worked out.

FIA Formula 3: Great drive, well done today. Jake, you started third. Just talk us through that opening lap and the fight with Liam that ultimately secured you second place.

Jake Hughes: It looked like I got a better start from the line straight away from Liam, and we were side-by-side until Turn 6 I think. It was a good battle and thankfully I managed to come out in front. I pushed quite hard to try and get back into the one second gap to Logan for Lap 3, but that wasn't to be. I think Liam made a mistake somewhere and I had a gap for the first 12 laps or something. It wasn't like I was saving tyres, but I was trying to see if I could catch Logan while managing them at the same time. At some point I started to struggle, especially in the last four or five laps, and Liam gave me a rough time. It wasn't a nice feeling to see him coming up in the mirror. I'm happy to get P2.

FIA Formula 3: Your first podium of the season, and a clear step these last two weekends. Does it feel like it's been a bit of a turning point in your year?

Jake: Yeah. We've kind of had the race pace generally throughout the year. We've just been struggling to start Race 1 from where we arguably should be. Nevertheless, I think that was still our weak point. Yesterday we seemed to improve that, and that gave us the potential to score the podium today. Let's see how it goes from now on.

FIA Formula 3: Thank you very much. Liam, coming to you. If we focus on the last lap, did you think you had Jake lined up before you saw those yellow flags at Stowe?

Liam Lawson: It was the closest I'd been, so I'm not going to lie, it was a little bit disappointing. He defended well for the last five laps and it would have been tough to get past, so I can't really say what would have happened. On the rest of the race, I think it was a bit of an average start. It wasn't ideal and we lost a place. From there I spent the first half of the race defending for my life. (Frederik) Vesti was really quick. We came on a little bit stronger towards the end. We didn't have such a drop off like Jake did and I started to come back. It was definitely one of the hardest races I've done.

FIA Formula 3: There was a real ebb and flow to the race, certainly behind Logan. Was that based on the temperatures? Was it tyre management? What was the cause of that?

Liam: It's hard to say really. For me, I was just driving. I was trying to conserve as much in the first few laps, because I know last week we struggled a lot with deg towards the end, even when I was leading. To be honest, we didn't actually have the raw pace anyway. I think Logan was really quick out in front and it was pulling everybody along and making it really hard to overtake behind.

FIA Formula 3: Congratulations, well done today. Logan, just returning to you. Is there an added satisfaction from this result, given how last weekend you took pole position and couldn't quite convert it into a win?

Logan: For sure. When I perform the way I did last Saturday, I don't take that lightly. I learn from it. I came back today with a clear goal and achieved it.
