F1 - Russell wins in Singapore for Mercedes as McLaren wrap up Constructors' title

05.10.25

Mercedes’ George Rusell won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole position, beating Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen to the flag by five seconds as third place for Lando Norris and fourth for team-mate Oscar Piastri was enough to hand McLaren the Constructors’ Championship title for the second year in a row.

Russell took the lead at the start ahead of Verstappen as Norris, starting from fifth, barged through to take P3 in Turn 3, banging wheels with an irate Piastri who felt he should have given back the place, despite race officials confirming there was no transgression to investigate.

At the front, Russell was comfortable and by lap 10 he had carved out a 4.7s gap back to Verstappen who was complaining about the quality of his downshifts in a race that would become one of issue management for the Dutchman, who was told he was “free to push” and responded by saying: “I’ll try but everything is working against me in this race”.

As the race headed towards half distance, the Medium tyre starters began to make their pit stops for Hard tyres. Russell and team-mate Kimi Antonelli pitted lap 25 and they were followed over the following lap to the pit lane by Norris, and Piastri, who suffered a slow stop that dropped him nine seconds behind his team-mate.

Russell was now back in the lead, 3.7 seconds clear of Verstappen who was now 4.4s ahead of Norris. Piastri was fourth, ahead of Leclerc and Antonelli and Hamilton.

As the final stint evolved, Verstappen briefly reeled in Russell, taking a full second out of the Mercedes driver’s lead by lap 34. However, on lap 37, the Dutchman locked-up and after narrowly avoiding the barriers he dropped five seconds behind Russell. A second off at Turn 2 then allowed Norris to close to within two seconds and the Red Bull driver was soon on the radio again telling his team, “I’m struggling a lot now”, and Norris closed to within DRS range.

Despite his difficulties Verstappen was able to eke out a small gap back to Norris and over the final 10 laps he drove well to cross the line just behind Russell and in second.

With Norris third and Piastri a few seconds behind, a second FIA Formula One World Constructors’ Championship went to McLaren, with six races remaining.

“Pretty awesome,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown afterwards. “Unbelievable team here, unbelievable team back at the factory. All the men and women have done such an awesome job. The leadership that Andrea [Stella, Team Principal] has provided to this race team, the whole leadership team, our owners, our shareholders – it’s such a team effort. Pretty awesome to go back-to-back; it’s been a while since we’ve done it.”

Fifth place in the race went to Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. He was followed to the flag by Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, though the latter was set to be investigated after the race for a track limits infringement as he tried to manage brake issues in the final laps. Fernando Alonso crossed the line in eighth place ahead of Haas’ Oliver Bearman and the final point on offer went to Sainz.
