F1 - Piastri sets the pace ahead of Hadjar and Verstappen as red flags disrupt FP2 in Singapore

Oscar Piastri went quickest in stop-start second practice session for the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, with the Australian outpacing Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen by a little over a tenth of a second as red flags twice halted running at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
In the early minutes of the session, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli led the way ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris who was separated from team-mate Oscar Piastri by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.
As the session reached the 10-minute mark it was Norris who took control with a lap of 1:32.226 that put him half a second clear of Piastri, with Carlos Sainz popping up to third ahead of Antonelli. The Williams driver then improved to rise to second, just 0.080s back from first-placed Norris.
Piastri found more time, though, and the championship leader moved to P1 with a lap of 1:31.716. Norris slotted into second place, just 0.007s behind his team-mate and Lewis Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton took up fourth place a tenth of a second further back.
However, with 20 minutes gone the red flags came out for the first time. George Russell, in the other Mercedes, lost control in Turn 16 and after hitting the barriers and breaking his front wing, the Briton trundled back to the pit lane and would take no further part in the session.
The session got underway again with 30 minutes on the clock and on a rapidly improving track Haas’ Esteban Ocon jumped to top spot Ocon goes top with a 1:31.480, as Hamilton, on his used Mediums improved in P2.
But almost immediately the red flags were out again, this time for Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson.
The New Zealander carried too much speed into the final corners and broadsided the wall in Turn 17, puncturing his front right and losing the tyre carcass and causing damage to the right rear quarter of his car. He tried to limp back to the pit lane on three wheels but was forced to stop at the pit entry and the session was halted.
The session resumed with a little over 11 minutes left and there was plenty of activity in the pit lane as drivers attempted to get out on track and put in qualifying simulations.
Unfortunately, Leclerc was released into the path of Norris and, unsighted, the Monegasque driver collided with the Briton pushing the McLaren into the pit wall and breaking Norris’ front wing.
The British driver was pushed back to his pit box and the incident was set to be investigated after the session.
On track, on Softs, Verstappen vaulted to the top of the order with a lap of 1:30.857, just 0.020s ahead of FP1:s fastest man, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. Piastri was on the prowl, however, and though he was on used Softs, the Australian rose to P1 with a lap of 1:30.714.
Verstappen looked to be safe in P2 but at the last Hadjar popped in a lap of 1:30.847 to pip the Dutchman by 0.011s.
Behind Verstappen, Alonso finished in fourth place with Norris, who backed out of his Soft tyre run, in fifth spot, 0.483 off Piastri. Lance Stroll finished sixth in the second Aston Martin, ahead of Ocon, Sainz, Leclerc and Hamilton.
