F1 – Piastri quickest in practice for Miami Grand Prix ahead of Leclerc

02.05.25

F1 championship leader Oscar Piastri topped the timesheet in the sole practice session for the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix beating Charles Leclerc by over three tenths of a second, with Max Verstappen third.

On the second Sprint weekend of the season, Verstappen was quickly into action and the Dutchman, whose arrival in Miami was delayed by the birth of his first child, took top spot as he tested a new floor on his Red Bull Racing RB21.

It was George Russell who led the way in the first phase of the session, however,  with the Mercedes driver posting a time of 1:28.488s on Mediums tyres to sit ahead of Verstappen and McLaren duo Piastri and Lando Norris.

Russell then dropped the benchmark to 1:28.058 on the same compound as his team-mate Kimi Antonelli slotted into P2 ahead of Williams ‘ Carlos Sainz.

Russell would hang onto top spot for most of the session as the bulk of the field continued to evaluate the Medium tyre, ahead of Sprint qualifying.

Finally, however, drivers began to make the switch to soft tyres and qualifying simulations. Williams drivers Sainz and Alex Albon initially jumped to the top of the order but as more regular frontrunners posted time they dropped down the order.

Verstappen and Leclerc took their turns in P1 but eventually Piastri leapt ahead with a lap of 1:27.128.

Along with a number of other drivers, Norris' quali sim was disrupted by when Haas’ Ollie Bearman, slid into barriers with four minutes left. The red flags came out and that effectively ended running early.

It that meant Leclerc and Verstappen remained in second and third respectively, followed by Sainz and Albon. Isack Hadjar was sixth for Racing Bulls car, ahead of Russell and the second Red Bull Racing car of Yuki Tsunoda. The top 10 order was rounded out by Antonelli and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
