F1 – Piastri quickest in FP2 in Barcelona ahead of Russell and Verstappen

30.05.25

F1 championship leader Oscar Piastri topped the timesheet in the second practice session for this weekend’s 2025 FIA Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix beating Mercedes’ George Russell by just under three tenths of a second, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen ahead of Monaco Grand Prix winner Lando Norris.

At the start of the second hour of practice

Norris set an early benchmark with a time of 1:13.636 with Piastri 0.351s off his team-mate on his opening lap. Verstappen then split the McLarens with a lap of 1:13.910. With 10 minutes gone Haas’ Ollie Bearman suffered a spin that sent him through the gravel at Turn 3, but the Briton was able to steer his way out and continue.

As the first third elapsed Russell stepped up the pace and he went quickest thanks to a lap of 1:13.046 on Soft tyres as team-mate Kimi Antonelli slotted into second place with a time of 1:13.298.

Verstappen then posted a 1:13.070s to go second on softs before Norris stopped the clock at exactly the same time, only handing Verstappen P2 by virtue of the Dutchman setting the time first.

Piastri then moved ahead of all of them with a lap of 1:12.760, putting him nearly three-tenths clear of Russell as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took fifth spot in what was shaping up to be a tricky session for the Scuderi, with both the Monegasque and team-mate Lewis Hamiton struggling for grip in the hot conditions.

With the bulk of the qualifying sims complete, attention turned to longer runs during the final third of FP2, leaving Piastri at the top of the order ahead of Russell, Verstappen and Norris. With Leclerc in P5, sixth place into the session went to Antonelli, with home favourite Alonso in seventh. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly took eighth spot, while Racing Bulls pair of Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson rounded out the top 10.

Hamilton, who complained that his Ferrari was “undriveable”, ended the session in 11th place, ahead of Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and the Williams duo of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.
