F1 - Norris tops final practice for Italian GP ahead of Leclerc and Piastri

McLaren’s Lando Norris went quickest in a closely competitive final hour of practice for the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, beating Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by just two hundredths of a second as championship leader Oscar Piastri finished third in the other McLaren.
At the start of the session it was Yuki Tsunoda who set the early pace. On Hard tyres, the Japanese driver took P1 with a time of 1:21.876 and over the following laps worked his way down to 1:20.775.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton moved to P2, 0.178s off the Red Bull, with Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar taking P3 on Soft tyres with a lap of 1:21.052.
As the session headed towards the 20-minute mark championship leader Oscar Piastri at last pushed Tsunoda out of P1 with a Hard tyre of 1:20.639. Tsunoda wasn’t in the mood to relinquish the position without a struggle and he returned to the top of the order with a lap of 1:20.462.
Hamilton then took a turn in top spot, but Tsunoda’s team-mate, Max Verstappen, was out on Soft tyres and the Dutchman took P1 with a time of 1:20.040. The Red Bull driver was followed on track by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who nudged team-mate Hamilton out of P2 with a Medium-tyre lap 1:20.054, just 0.014s off Verstappen. The Dutchman then got down to 1:19.688 to strengthen his grip on P1.
With longer runs in progress the order at the top changed little in the middle third of the session. With 25 minutes left Hamilton leapfrogged Leclerc to take P2 on 1:19.929 and Williams’ Alex Albon used to the Soft tyre to push Leclerc further out to P4 as Mercedes’ George Russell, also on Softs moved to fifth place.
With 17 minutes remaining, Norris emerged on Soft tyres and he took P1, 0.357s clear of Verstappen. Piastri was next across the line but he couldn’t get near his team-mate and he slotted into P2, 0.247 off the Briton.
Verstappen bolted on a fresh set of Softs, but the Dutchman took too much kerb midway through his flying lap and after backing off he headed back to the pit lane to work his way toward another attempt. This time he put in a clean lap and he moved from sixth to second place on 1:19.513, 0.182 behind Norris who also went out for another attempt.
The McLaren driver didn’t improve on his earlier time but Piastri jumped to P2 with a lap of 1:19.494, with Verstappen ahead of Russell and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto.
With a couple of minutes remaining a host of drivers headed out for final attempt and Leclerc was the biggest improver, climbing from P11 to P2, just 0.021s behind P1 man Norris thanks to a lap of 1:19.353.
Piastri took third, 0.165s off his team-mate, while Verstappen made a small improvement to post a lap of 1:19.498, just 0.002s off the Australian. Russell took P5 ahead of Bortoleto with Hamilton in seventh. Hadjar gave Racing Bulls hope of another Q3 in qualifying by taking P8 ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. And separated from P1 by just under four tenths of a second, Albon rounded out the top 10 order.
