F1 - Norris quickest in final practice for Dutch Grand Prix ahead of Piastri, Russell

30.08.25

Lando Norris went quickest in the final practice session for the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, beating McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri by more than two tenths of a second as Mercedes’ George Russell took third place, eight tenths of a second off the pace with a best time set on Medium tyres.

The session got off to a slow start with only a handful of drivers heading out on track in the first 15 minutes. Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto led the way across the opening quarter, posting a time of 1:12.014 set on Hard tyres. That put him a little under five hundredths of a second ahead of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who was running on Medium compound Pirellis.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, running a newly built chassis after his FP2 crash then emerged on Soft tyres and he moved to top spot with a time of 1:11.854.

Antonelli, still circulating on Mediums, was going quicker, however, and his 10th lap of the morning pushed up to P1 on 1:11.187. Fernando Alonso, in the other Aston Martin, had also fitted Soft tyres, and he climbed to P1 with a lap of 1:11.082.

At the 20-minute mark Friday’s fastest man, Lando Norris, left the McLaren garage and with Soft tyres on board the Briton vaulted to the top of the order with a time of 1:10.262.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, on Mediums, briefly claimed P2, but he was bumped back to third by championship leader Oscar Piastri who took second place 0.071s off his title team-mate.

Verstappen was then bumped back one more position by RB’s Isack Hadjar who moved almost three tenths ahead of the Dutchman thanks to a lap of 1:10.751. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also went quicker than the Red Bull driver but Verstappen then upped the pace on his yellow-banded tyres to jump up to third, 0.441 off Norris with a 1:10.703.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, on Softs, usurped Max, and then Haas’ Ollie Bearman sprung a surprise by taking fourth place on Hard tyres, just half a second off Norris.

Piastri, though, was back out on Softs and this time the Australian found the pace necessary to oust Norris and the championship leader moved to P1 with a lap of 1:10.262, 0.142s ahead of his team-mate.

With 20 minutes left on the clock the bulk of the field returned to the pit lane to prepare for qualifying sims. The exception was the Ferrari pair who headed out again in Medium tyres, though neither driver found an improvement.

Norris, though, was out on new Softs and the Hungarian Grand Prix-winner went purple in all three sectors to post a lap of 1:08.972, seven tenths of a second quicker than last year’s pole time.

Verstappen briefly took P2 with his Soft tyre run, but at almost a second off he was never going to hold on to that position and it was Piastri who bounced the Dutchman out. But while the Australian went quicker than Verstappen, he couldn’t match Norris, however and he took P2 0.242s off the Briton.

Russell took third place with a lap of 1:09.214, a strong time given the Mercedes driver was on Medium tyres. Carlos Sainz impressed with fourth place for Williams, while Verstappen ended the session in fifth place.

Behind the Dutchman, Leclerc finished sixth for Ferrari, ahead of the second Williams of Alex Albon, Stroll, Racing Bull driver Isack Hadjar and Alonso.
