F1 – Norris continues to set the pace in Zandvoort as Stroll and Albon crash

29.08.25

McLaren’s Lando Norris made it a clean sweep of Friday practice sessions by beating Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to top spot in a second practice session for the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix that was twice halted for crashes involving Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Williams’ Alex Albon. Championship leader Oscar Piastri finished the session in third place.

With clouds rolling in across the circuit, Norris opened the session with a 1:12.615 set on Medium tyres, with Williams’ Carlos eight tenths of second behind on Hard compound Pirellis.

Sainz then moved ahead on 1:12.564, but that was soon surpassed by Alonso who logged a lap of 1:12.131 before Norris posted a lap of 1:11.294 on Mediums, to put 0.837s between himself and the Spaniard, who was also dropped back Stroll by about 0.15s. Haas’ Ollie Bearman then went quicker than everyone with a lap of 1:11.113.

There was no chance for Norris to any of the young Briton’s rivals to best that as the red flags came out soon after. Stroll appeared to be unsettled as he came out of Turn and he went wide and hit the wall in Turn 3, causing heavy damage to the right side of his Aston Martin.

After a 10-min delay the action resumed by a VAS was soon deployed. RB’s Isack Hadjar complained that he had "no power," and he stopped on track at Turn 8, resulting in the caution.

His car was quickly cleared from the track and Kick Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg went quickest on Softs, setting a 1:11.080. He might have swiftly been demoted, as Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was running quicker, but the Briton spun on the exit of Turn 9, wrecking his lap.

Alonso then secured a strong two from one of the Williams cars to take top spot on 1:09.977 but Norris then beat the two-time champion by 0.087s to go top with his soft-tyre run of 1:09.890.

Local hero Max Verstappen then climbed up to fifth, 0.6s off the pace, but almost immediately after he crossed the line, Albon slid off track at Turn 1, dislodging his front wing as he car came to a halt at the barrier.

After a six-minute delay the sessions resumed but the field moved back to harder compound tyres for the remainder of the session.

It left Norris in charge, ahead of Alonso and with championship leader Piastri in P3, just 0.002 behind the Aston Martin man. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes ahead of Verstappen, while Hamilton led the Ferrari charge in P6, albeit 0.848s off Norris’ pace. Yuki Tsunoda ended the session in P7 ahead of the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc and Franco Colaptino finished a useful ninth for Alpine. The top ten order was rounded out by Hülkenberg.
