ETRC - 2018 Race of Hungaroring - Race 1 & 2

Jochen Hahn and Adam Lacko shared the victories in the first day of FIA European Truck Racing Championship action at Hungaroring today.

The drivers, who have taken the last two FIA ETRC titles, took the wins after entertaining events in the fifth and sixth races of the season.

While Hahn took a convincing win in the first encounter, Lacko narrowly beat Rene Reinert in the second after contending with a brake disc problem on the final lap.

The action was thick and fast in Hungary today where local hero Norbert Kiss delighted his home crowd with a fighting second place in Race 1.

With a large crowd enjoying the lively paddock atmosphere, the second round of the 2018 FIA ETRC got off to a memorable start.

Race 1

Jochen Hahn claimed his third win of the 2018 FIA European Truck Racing Championship at Hungaroring this afternoon.

The four-time FIA ETRC champion led home favourite Norbert Kiss to take his first win in Hungary since 2016. The Hahn Racing IVECO driver’s margin over Kiss’ Tankpool24 Racing Mercedes-Benz was 2.451s at the chequered flag.

For Kiss it was a fine start to his home race weekend but he was unable to exert big pressure on Hahn throughout the 11-lap event. A mistake at Turn 12 on lap 8 dropped Kiss further behind and he spent the last few laps manging the gap to third placed Steffi Halm.

The early laps so race-defining drama as pole sitter Adam Lacko initially led the pack in his Buggyra International Racing System Freightliner.

The reigning champion though was overtaken by a chasing Hahn on lap 2 and then fell back to sixth position after being shuffled down the order due to losing momentum after Hahn’s decisive move.

It soon became evident that Lacko has significant damage including a damaged Goodyear tyre due to contact and he faded quickly and was eventually classified in 9th position.

Race 2

Adam Lacko won the second race of the day at Hungaroring this afternoon to claim his first win of the 2018 FIA ETRC season.

The Buggyra International Racing System driver converted pole position to head home Rene Reinert.

But it was no easy win for the reigning champion as Reinert pressured Lacko all the way to the flag, with the German almost capitalising on a late race lock-up for Lacko. This was due to a cracked brake-disc which saw a once healthy gap trimmed to just 0.3s at the chequered flag.

Reinert managed to find a way passed front-row starter Shane Brereton on the opening lap of the race and completed his best result since returning to the FIA ETRC after a year of sabbatical.

Behind the front two there was high drama as Brereton was joined by an eight truck train as Steffi Halm tried to find a way through in the early stages.

The Team Schwabentruck IVECO driver managed to make a clean move at Turn 1 on lap 4, and soon pulled clear to claim her second podium of the day.
