30.06.18

ETRC - 2018 Race of Nürburgring- Race 1 & 2

A pair of highly-entertaining FIA European Truck Racing Championship races thrilled a huge Nürburgring crowd today as Antonio Albacete and Steffi Halm claimed a victory apiece.

In scorching sunshine and physically draining conditions the world’s best truck racing drivers battled out two titanic races.

Triple FIA ETRC champion Antonio Albacete took his first win since Jarama last autumn to take an accomplished pole to chequered flag win for Trucksport Lutz Bernau in the first 13-lap encounter of the day.

In the second race Steffi Halm raised the roof on the packed Nürburgring grandstands to take a hugely popular win for the local Team Schwabentruck IVECO squad.

With Halm’s teammate Gerd Korber taking second the Nürburgring was awash with orange as the fans celebrated a famous 1-2 at the immensely popular ADAC Truck Grand Prix.

Antonio Albacete claimed a hard-earned victory in the first race of the Nürburgring FIA European Truck Racing Championship weekend this morning.

The Trucksport Lutz Bernau driver converted pole position to take a slender victory from Jochen Hahn after the multiple German champion applied huge pressure on the Spaniard throughout the 13 lap race.

Albacete though was able to hold off his nemesis and win by just 0.8s to take his first win since the Jarama last October.

Completing the podium was Norbert Kiss in his Tankpool24 Racing Mercedes-Benz. Kiss made a fine start and was able to capitalise on problems to third place starter Rene Reinert who was forced to retire in the early exchanges with damage to his truck after contact.

Adam Lacko made good progress in the opening stages to come through to fourth place in his Buggyra International Racing System. The reigning champion held off Steffi Halm’s Team Schwabentruck IVECO throughout the race.

Race 2

Steffi Halm led home a famous Team Schwabentruck IVECO 1-2 at Nürburgring this afternoon to send her home fans delirious in the second FIA European Truck Racing Championship.

It was Halm’s second FIA ETRC victory on home ground as she reprised her win from 2016 to take her first win in an IVECO truck.

The result also meant that with Jochen Hahn finishing out of the top ten, the gap from the four-time champion to the chasing pack is down to 27-points.

Halm managed to clear teammate and pole sitter Gerd Korber on lap four of the race after the German veteran made way to then defend his second from a charging Buggyra International Racing System Freightliner driven by Adam Lacko.

Lacko eventually fell back from Korber and left the Team Schwabentruck IVECO’s to complete a formation finish to delight the legions of IVECO fans and partners.

For Korber it was one of his finest races as he had to deal with a severely damaged windscreen after it was struck by debris early in the race. The German veteran performed miracles to keep his concentration and his hard-won second place to the flag.
