ERC Junior Under 28 Post - Barum Czech Rally Zlín quotes

28.08.17

Round 4 of 6: Barum Czech Rally Zlín, 25-27 August

ERC, Barum Czech Rally Zlin

JAN ČERNÝ (CZE) Position: Second
Co-driver: Petr Černohorský (CZE) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I am not really happy because I wanted to fight for the victory in Junior and also for a good result overall. But I am unlucky. We had a puncture, it’s part of the game but it makes me quite sad because we were in a good position, I had much more confidence, we were improving and I was enjoying myself. Our season in the European championship has not been really good. Two crashes, a really bad result in Poland and another one here because of the puncture. We have to work on many things but I know I can do better.”

MARIJAN GRIEBEL (DEU) Position: First
Co-driver: Stefan Kopcyzk (DEU) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I didn’t really expect we can be champion after four out of six races but every race in the ERC went nearly perfect with three wins and third place in Canarias. It was very good so thank you really much to Baumschlager Rallye & Racing who gave me a perfect car every time. We had no issues and no problems all season and I’m just really happy. The ERC is really cool. We have really challenging and different rallies where I could learn a lot. Also the promotion of the ERC is really good with a lot of TV time, which makes it easier to find some sponsors. Everything came together for me and this is another big step in my career. We were trying to finish the rally without any problems. We had one big moment in a bumpy section on Saturday and we also had to change the tyre just before the start of one stage. I recognised we had a nail in the tyre and it was quite stressful because I also had to reverse in the time control to let in Nikolay [Gryazin] who had arrived late. The Junior win was always more important than everything else, anything extra would be positive.”

NIKOLAY GRYAZIN (RUS) Position: Third
Co-driver: Yaroslav Fedorov (RUS) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“My target was to finish this rally so I was not pushing like at other races. It was getting better on each stage but sometimes I was on two wheels and it was difficult. On Semetín it was not a flat corner but I tried to go flat with a cut. The car hit the bottom at 140kph and it hurt my back a bit but I think it's okay. The stages were tricky and it was difficult on the bumps. We could have finished in the top 10 but then we got a puncture on the last stage.”

PEPE LÓPEZ (ESP) Position: Sixth
Co-driver: Borja Rozada (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“We didn’t have the pace with our car and it was impossible to attack on this rally for my first time here without a proper test and not so many rallies on Tarmac with this car. On the first stage on Saturday we hit a chicken and we also had some technical problems at the rear of the car. We need to analyse lots of things but I need more kilometres to have more pace. We couldn’t find the pace so it was better to finish the rally like this.”

JOSH MOFFETT (IRL) Position: Fifth
Co-driver: James Fulton (IRL) Car: Ford Fiesta R5

“It was an unbelievable rally. I was surprised how much I was enjoying it because it was really difficult with so many crests and with the car off the road a lot of times. The first day was a bit messy, we lost the brakes at one point and then we clipped a post on Saturday afternoon and that badly bent the steering. I struggled for two stages and pushed as hard as I could but I didn’t want to do anything stupid because it was quite scary. We went wide into a ditch on the last stage on Saturday and lost the wheel but we got it fixed and the boys did an amazing job at service. After that we were just trying to get through and get home.”

JOSÉ SUÁREZ (ESP) Position: Fourth
Co-driver: Cándido Carrera (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“It was an amazing rally but really tricky and the Czech drivers were really fast. We kept fighting but we had some punctures and on stage three, in the entry to one corner, I was so much optimist and touched a little bit the tree and the body touched a little the tyre and this caused some smoke. I was lucky and sometimes I do have luck on my side. It was really hard but on the same level it was a really fun rally with lots of spectators. I also did some good times.”
