Bringing Global Innovation to Local Communities: Mobility Regions meet at the FIA General Assemblies week in Tashkent

During the FIA General Assemblies week in Tashkent, all four FIA Mobility Regions came together for a series of meetings, demonstrating the global reach of the FIA network and the impact we can make at the community level. 

Throughout a series of engaging sessions, Delegates discussed how they’re making mobility safer, more affordable and more sustainable for road users, wherever they are. 

FIA Region I MENA Mobility Council (Middle East and North Africa) 

At the FIA Region I MENA Mobility Council meeting in Tashkent, chaired by its President Essa Hamza Alfailakawi, delegates received an update on the progress of the digitalisation of the Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) and the development of the new International Driving Permit (IDP) model, which is expected to be submitted for approval to the UNECE Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety in March 2026. 

Participants were also briefed on a new initiative aimed at enhancing tourism mobility across the Region. 

The Council highlighted the success of the recent Council’s workshop in Muscat, Oman, celebrated the launch of the region’s first Road Safety Academy, and reviewed continuing progress on the MENA Augmented Reality Road Safety Project, with Phase 2 scheduled for 2026. 

FIA Region I ACTA Meeting (Africa) 

President of FIA Region I ACTA Sub Division (Africa) Jinaro Kibet introduced a session focused on building capacity to better engage with communities on safe mobility across the continent. 

Delegates discussed the success of the FIA Region I African Best Young Driver competition, and its final hosted by AA Kenya, as an educational tool supporting young people with the knowledge and practical training to stay safe behind the wheel.  

Clubs highlighted their efforts towards achieving their one- and two-star rating from the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme and the projects supported by the FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility programme in the region. 

Over the coming year, FIA Region I ACTA Sub Division hopes to expand the Best Young Driver competition, increase road patrol training activities, deliver an African Traffic Education Project, and increase visibility for Clubs by progressing their digital transformation. 

FIA Region I Nordic Coordination Forum (NOCOF) Meeting 

A successful programme across the region, the FIA Region I Best Young Driver Contest and its role in educating young drivers across Europe took central stage in the meeting chaired by Ian Stovicek.   

FIA Region I COFO Delegates also heard from the Fédération Automobile d’Ukraine (FAU) on their Mobile Safety Driving Centre toolkit, Safe Driver Education for All in a Box, making driver training accessible in low- and middle-income communities.  

They also received an update on how the FIA is empowering Members turning expertise into scalable value, with projects such as the FIA Driver Safety Index, or building capacity, such as through the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life Programme. 

FIA Region I Coordination Forum for Eastern and Central Europe (COFO) Meeting  

A successful programme across the region, the FIA Region I Best Young Driver Contest and its role in educating young drivers across Europe took central stage in the meeting chaired by Ian Stovicek.   

FIA Region I COFO Delegates also heard from the Fédération Automobile d’Ukraine (FAU) on their Mobile Safety Driving Centre toolkit, Safe Driver Education for All in a Box, making driver training accessible in low- and middle-income communities.  

They also received an update on how the FIA is empowering Members turning expertise into scalable value, with projects such as the FIA Driver Safety Index, or building capacity, such as through the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life Programme. 

FIA Region II Plenary (Asia Pacific) 

The newly elected President of FIA Region II Augustus ‘Joe’ Ferreria opened the meeting with an overview of enhanced financial processes for the Region and outlined plans to strengthen communication channels. 

Delegates then received a presentation on emerging drone-related business opportunities, including drone training scheduled for March 2026 in Nepal. 

Looking ahead to 2026, the Region will prioritise the development of two working groups focused on tourism and new commercial opportunities for Clubs.

FIA Region III Meeting (North America) 

Chaired by FIA Region III President Frank Fotia the meeting highlighted the successful projects from 2025 that demonstrate the commitment of the FIA and Member Clubs network in providing safe, affordable and sustainable mobility across the region.

Discussions turned to business development opportunities including the use of modern technologies and AI to expand the offering of Clubs for consumers in a changing mobility landscape. Examples included exploring the role of Clubs in the operation of drones and the AI-enabled FIA Driver Safety Index.    

Clubs received important updates from the FIA Foundation, the FIA Mobility Services Commission and the FIA Mobility Policy Commission, demonstrating how their voices will shape plans for the future. The meeting ended with a roundtable where Clubs exchanged successes and challenges, fostering knowledge sharing across the Region. 

FIA Region IV Meeting (South and Central America) 

During the FIA Region IV meeting chaired by its President Ricardo Morales Rubio, Member Clubs reflected on successful activities from the past 12 months and their potential to implement meaningful road safety programmes at the local level, including the launch of the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All and 4 Life national projects.   

Looking to the future, Clubs were also updated on the regional edition of the FIA University, focusing on leadership in an increasingly evolving mobility landscape, including ways of harnessing artificial intelligence and the development of an innovative mindset as key tools to empower Clubs and strengthen their work in the digital era.
