ALL-ELECTRIC SINGLE-SEATER STARS SET TO TURN UP THE HEAT IN INDONESIA

16.06.25

Jakarta International Circuit awaits the Season 11 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship field this weekend.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship makes the final long-haul trip of its 2024/25 campaign this weekend (21 June), as Jakarta returns to the fray following a two-year absence – and the action on-track is expected to be every bit as hot as the temperatures off it.

Indonesia first joined the pioneering all-electric single-seater series’ schedule in 2022 – becoming the fourth Asian nation to host an E-Prix, after China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

Located in the Ancol coastal area of the country’s capital and looking out over Jakarta Bay, the 2.37km, 18-turn Jakarta International Circuit alternates fast-and-flowing sections with tight-and-twisty turns, as banked corners add to the challenge – and in its three races to-date, it has already served up some crowd-pleasing contests.

“We’re delighted to be back in Jakarta after the successful E-Prixs staged there in 2022 and 2023, and we have been working closely with both Formula E Holdings and the Indonesian ASN to make the forthcoming event the best yet,” commented FIA Head of Championship for Formula E, Pablo Martino.

“At the same time, we will continue investing in the growth of motorsport in Indonesia. We have planned specific sessions with the Clerk of the Course, the local marshals, the recovery teams and everybody working in Race Control to fine-tune the racing procedures ahead of the race weekend, with the ultimate goal of leaving behind a legacy in terms of motorsport knowledge and expertise that can subsequently be applied at local level for years to come.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS
The inaugural Jakarta E-Prix instantly put Formula E on the map in the region, with Mitch Evans narrowly pipping two-time champion and pole-sitter Jean-Éric Vergne to glory at the end of a captivating see-saw duel.

The New Zealander reached the rostrum there again the following season. It is a result he will be aiming to replicate this weekend, as Jaguar TCS Racing – buoyed by Nick Cassidy’s dominant victory in Shanghai last time out – bids to salvage something from its disappointing title defence.

Maserati MSG Racing’s Maximilian Günther, meanwhile, made history in Southeast Asia’s largest city in 2023, as he sped to the iconic Italian marque’s first world championship single-seater triumph since the great Juan Manuel Fangio 66 years earlier.

Not only is the German the qualifying lap record-holder in Jakarta – having grabbed both pole positions in the most recent event held there – he is moreover in a fine vein of form in Season 11, as he returns to Indonesia hot on the heels of a commanding seventh career win in China.

ROWLAND READYING FOR FINAL STRETCH
While failing to score in the second race in Shanghai means Nissan Formula E Team ace Oliver Rowland cannot now win the championship in Jakarta, he can certainly put one hand on the coveted crown should he outperform his main competitors on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Yorkshireman has unquestionably been the standout driver of the GEN3 era thus far, with four victories and three further podium finishes propelling him well clear of his pursuers at the top of the table – although his advantage was reduced from 86 points to 68 on day two in China.

Rowland’s record in Indonesia is also somewhat inauspicious – losing a wheel in his lone outing there to-date in 2022, followed by a non-appearance 12 months later after parting company with Mahindra Racing ahead of the event. He will be hoping the third time’s a charm...

LAST-CHANCE SALOON FOR CHASING PACK?
Notwithstanding his loss of points on day two in Shanghai, Rowland’s championship lead is still substantial, and his adversaries recognise Jakarta could be their last realistic opportunity to stop his seemingly inexorable march towards a maiden Formula E title.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team pairing Pascal Wehrlein and António Félix da Costa sit second and third in the classification, and both have excelled in Indonesia in the past – the German winning last season and his Portuguese team-mate qualifying on the front row of the grid in 2022. If they are to stand any chance of halting their British rival in his tracks, they know it needs to be now – or never.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
Round 12 of the 2024/25 Formula E campaign will get underway at 15:05 local time (10:05 CEST) on Saturday, 21 June.
