The Automobile Club of Uruguay (ACU) held a press conference to present the Club’s activities as part of its 100th anniversary celebration.

ACU President, Jorge Tomasi, and other local representatives announced in a press conference held last week that Uruguay will host international events and initiatives throughout the year, including the FIA Congress of Americas and FIA Mobility Conference in July.

ACU’s centennial press conference took place at the pressroom of the Torre Ejecutiva de la Presidencia, Uruguay’s Government House, and gathered more than 150 people including various national and local representatives, distinguished members from the public and the private sector, as well as journalists.

On this occasion, ACU’s centennial logo, post stamp and book were unveiled. The logo was chosen as part of a contest carried out via social media, and the book narrates the history of the Club and features historical pictures and illustrations.

As well as announcing the opening of a new branch of ACU in Carrasco, the Club presented the upcoming Electric Mobility and Smart Cities Show, which will promote electric mobility. The event is the first forum of this kind in the country and has received the support of the government and city of Montevideo.

On the topic of road safety, ACU – together with the National Traffic Police, the Congress of Mayors, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and UNICEF - will focus on raising awareness. Through educational activities covering topics such as school transport; the installation of child restraint systems; responsible driving for motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrian mobility; medical care to traffic accident victims; the effects of driving under influence; driving distractions, and transport in roads and the importance of wearing seat belts, the Club hopes to improve safety for all road users in the country.

With regard to its sporting activities, the Club confirmed Uruguay will host the 6th edition of 2017-2018 FIA Formula E World Championship in Punta del Este in March. Colonia, in southwestern Uruguay was chosen as the venue for one of the competitions of the “Historic Rally”, which is part of the South American Historic Rally schedule.
