The Automóvil Club de Chile (ACCHI), BMW i and Enel X opened the first public charging station for electric vehicles in Santiago’s Providencia district on 1 August.

With the aim of accelerating the arrival of electric mobility in Chile, and facilitating the access of electric vehicles to the supply that allows them to circulate around the city, the new EV charging station will be officially inaugurated on September 30 in the presence of representatives from the city authorities, the Energy and Transport Ministry and the County Mayor.

The station will operate at the Headquarters of the Automóvil Club de Chile, and will allow owners of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the Metropolitan Region to charge their vehicles for a maximum period of 2 and a half hours at no cost.

This charging point will work from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 6pm, and will have two connectors that will serve two vehicles simultaneously.

“The greater autonomy that electric vehicles have reached has posed the challenge of expanding the electric stations to regions and other points of the capital,” says Alberto Escobar, manager of Automobile Mobility Club of Chile and executive secretary of the Electric Mobility Group of Chile.

“In ten years, or sooner, the difference in price between a car of this type and a conventional one will be very low”, he continues. “It is projected that in this period 40% of the vehicle fleet will be electric and the country must be prepared to create more spaces to sustain the arrival of this technological revolution.”
