ABB FIA FORMULA E WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS FOR SEASON 12 (2025/26) WITH SÃO PAULO SEASON OPENER

04.12.25

Season 12 (2025/26) of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship begins in São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday, 6 December 2025. The rivalries and intense racing action of Season 11 will be reignited as Formula E charges around the iconic Sambadrome.

For the second time, the championship begins in the fan-favourite city of São Paulo, Brazil - home of racing legends Ayrton Senna and Emerson Fittipaldi - for Season 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Reigning FIA World Champion, Oliver Rowland, and reigning FIA World Champions for Teams, Porsche Formula E Team, will be eager to start the season on a high. In addition, Season 12 features several new drivers, including Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (Andretti Formula E), Pepe Martí (Cupra Kiro) and Joel Eriksson (Envision Racing), who will be keen to make their mark around the iconic São Paulo venue.

With a population of over 23 million, Brazil’s largest city plays host to Formula E’s São Paulo E-Prix for the fourth time. The 11 turns of the 2.933km circuit sees three long, fast straights knitted together by technical chicanes and tight right-handers, lending itself to plenty of overtakes and dramatic moves. Fans can look forward to overtaking, slipstreaming and critical energy and battery temperature management.

Last season, the São Paulo E-Prix delivered an exciting start to Season 11, culminating in a historic victory for Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing), in which the Kiwi driver started last on the 22-car grid, utilising two red flags and a strategic use of Attack Mode to fight his way up the field. Evans held off pressure from António Félix da Costa (Jaguar TCS Racing, previously Porsche Formula E) to take the win, while rookie Taylor Barnard (DS PENSKE, previously NEOM McLaren) claimed a sensational third place, becoming the youngest podium finisher in the championship's history.

Pablo Martino, FIA Head of Formula E, said : “We’re thrilled to kick off this final season of the GEN3 Evo cars in Brazil, in front of a passionate crowd, and on a track that never fails to deliver bold overtakes. Its hot weather also pushes tyre and temperature management to the limit. With the reshaped grid, the arrival of Citroën Racing and a field that has never been tighter, everything points to a spectacular, high-energy showdown once again.”

Oliver Rowland, No.1, Nissan Formula E Team, said“I’m looking forward to being out on-track in Brazil and starting the new campaign as defending Drivers’ World Champion. It’s a new season so our focus is once again on maximizing our performance throughout as the field will be even tighter. It’s a tricky circuit, there is minimal grip as well as it being quite bumpy. Managing the temperatures in the hot weather is going to be crucial and it’ll also be important to settle into a good rhythm from FP1. I led the majority of the São Paulo E-Prix last year, of course there has been a lot of racing since then, but I will be aiming to fight at the front again to ensure a strong start to the new season.”

Felipe Drugovich, No.28, Andretti Formula E, said: "I'm super, super excited. I think it will probably rank up there in one of the best experiences I will have in my career; to make my debut in an international race and top-tier motorsport series in Brazil. I will be aiming to deliver the best result possible in front of all of the Brazilian fans. The track is very fast and produces a lot of great overtaking, with the additional challenge of managing your energy. I'm just really looking forward to getting to São Paulo, and I'm going to try and enjoy it by taking in as much as I can at my first race."

Mitch Evans, No.9, Jaguar TCS Racing, said: "São Paulo will always be special to me after last year’s race – coming through from 22nd on the grid to take the win was a record-breaking moment and one moment of my career I will never forget. The team and I know how tough this track can be, but we’re ready to fight hard again and hopefully deliver another result for the fans. The Brazilian crowd is incredible – their passion and energy bring such an amazing atmosphere, and that makes racing here even more exciting.”

WHAT’S NEW FOR SEASON 12
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will return to the vibrant coastal city of Sanya for the first time since Season 5, joining Shanghai on the Season 12 calendar and marking Formula E’s largest and most expansive calendar to date - 17 races across 11 venues.

Season 12 plays host to two races in China, reinforcing its importance as a strategic and historic market for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The Sanya street circuit promises a unique challenge and spectacular tropical backdrop for the championship’s expansion in China.

In sporting updates, there have been changes made to Formula E’s popular Qualifying format and ATTACK MODE. In Qualifying, the Group stages have been reduced to 10 minutes each, with revised duel timings - creating a faster, and more viewer-friendly format that fits within an hour.

Meanwhile, ATTACK MODE has been adjusted to keep racing unpredictable. PIT BOOST races will have the option to feature one ATTACK MODE, while non-PIT BOOST races retain two activations. The obligation to complete the total ATTACK MODE time has been removed.

A major milestone has been made in Formula E’s financial regulations - maternity and paternity pay are now excluded from the cost cap. This ensures that teams can fully support their people through key life events without compromising competitiveness or financial fairness - a significant step forward for Formula E and the FIA’s Women’s Strategy and wider inclusivity goals.

Finally, the Rookie Free Practice session will take place as part of the 2026 Miami E-Prix, and the Rookie Collective Test will take place after the 2026 Madrid E-Prix. These sessions allow teams to give meaningful opportunities to the next generation of driver talent.

DRIVER MARKET MOVEMENT
In the off-season, there have been some big driver market moves, reshaping the grid for Season 12. The newly-formed Citroën Racing has joined the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, signing Nick Cassidy and Jean-Eric Vergne, who have moved from Jaguar TCS Racing and DS PENSKE, respectively. Replacing Vergne at DS PENSKE is Taylor Barnard, following a record-breaking rookie season, who will compete alongside Maximilian Günther.

2022 Formula 2 Champion Felipe Drugovich has joined Jake Dennis at Andretti Formula E, while Joel Eriksson joins Sebastien Buemi at Envision Racing, and Norman Nato returns to Nissan Formula E Team alongside the reigning 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Champion Oliver Rowland.
2019/20 Formula E World Champion Antonio Felix Da Costa joins Mitch Evans at Jaguar TCS Racing, while current Formula 2 driver Josep (Pepe) Maria Martí will compete for CUPRA Kiro alongside Dan Ticktum.

FIA GIRLS ON TRACK AT THE 2025 SÃO PAULO E-PRIX

Reaffirming its commitment to education and gender inclusivity in motorsport, the FIA Girls on Track initiative for Season 12 is aiming to reach even more young women in every race market, supporting the growing demand of young women who are seeking opportunities and support to pursue careers in motorsport. FIA Girls on Track activity for the 2025 São Paulo E-Prix includes hosting up to 120 young women for its FIA Girls on Track programme across the race week. Attendees will participate in workshops, gaming, career talks and a Pit Lane Walk, promoting empowerment and education in motorsport and engineering.
