2025 FIA Extraordinary General Assemblies
- The Extraordinary General Assemblies (EGA) took place in Macau and was hosted by FIA Member Club the Automobile General Association Macao-China (AAMC), supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group
- The event was held at the iconic Galaxy International Convention Center, where the EGA will be hosted in 2026 and 2027
- Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), the leading voice for the automotive sector in the U.S, with over 7,000 member companies, officially became a Member of the FIA
- Malcolm Wilson OBE was elected in by a majority of Clubs as FIA Deputy President for Sport
- The 2024 FIA Activity Report approved and published in full, including accounts for the financial year and demonstrating financial strength and turnaround
- New electoral rules were voted for by a large majority of the FIA Members, designed to ensure consistency and rigour in candidate selection

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, held its Extraordinary General Assemblies in Macau today, as part of the annual FIA Conference.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “Our mid-year Conference is a valuable opportunity to engage with our Member Clubs, celebrate our successes, and set our sights on the future. It is a time to strengthen connections and drive our strategy forward with renewed momentum, as we continue to deliver on our commitments.
Our global community continues to grow and today the FIA Family welcomed SEMA as a Full Member. A leading voice across the U.S. in mobility services, tourism, and automotive advocacy, SEMA represents an industry that contributes $337 billion in economic impact to the U.S., supporting 1.3 million jobs. This new partnership will bring fresh ideas, energy, and opportunities to expand our impact.
As we publish our full Activity Report for 2024, I am proud to say that for the first time in 8 years, the FIA is financially secure. We are in a strong position to support our Member Clubs, and in vital areas such as grassroots initiatives, innovation and sustainability. This is a pivotal moment for our Federation.”
The FIA presented and approved its 2024 accounts and Activity Report, detailing the FIA’s successful return to financial health during Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s presidency. Earlier this year, the FIA announced that it had recorded an operating result of €4.7m in 2024, its strongest financial result since 2018. The full 2024 Activity Report can be found here.
Admission of New Members
Based on the recommendation of the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism, the EGA approved the admission of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), the leading voice for the automotive sector in the U.S. The automotive industry contributes nearly $337 billion in economic impact to the U.S economy, supports 1.3 million jobs nationally, and generates $52.3 billion in parts sales annually. The FIA also approved Through Countries to Car Services (TCCS, Jordan) as an Associate Member in accordance with Article 3.6 of the FIA Statutes.
Elections to FIA bodies
The EGA elected Malcolm Wilson OBE as FIA Deputy President for Sport, by an overwhelming majority of the FIA Members.
Change of competence or status
The EGA approved to change that Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC, Rwanda) be recognised for Automobile Mobility and Tourism competence in addition to Sport. The EGA also approved the change of status of IAM RoadSmart (IAM, United Kingdom) from Full to Associate Member.
Resignation and striking off the rolls
The EGA registered the resignation of the Association Internationale des Circuits Permanents (AICP) with effect as from 31 December 2024, and decided the striking of the rolls of the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM, Malaysia)
Amendments to the FIA Statutes and Internal Regulations
The Extraordinary General Assembly approved amendments to the FIA Statutes and Internal Regulations including, among others, the fact that:
- Deadlines for submitting presidential lists and candidatures for the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) have been brought four weeks forward. This will allow the Nominations Committee to have more time to examine the eligibility criteria of the candidates for these positions.
- As from now, the Senate will be entitled to propose up to 2 candidates for the WMSC. The latter’s nationality rule has been made more flexible, allowing a maximum of two members from the same nationality from among the 7 Vice Presidents and 14 elected members.
- The start of the term of offices of the members of the Audit, Ethics and Nominations Committees will be aligned with that of the members of the presidential list.
- A clarification has been provided regarding the appointment of the Vice-Presidents of Region I.
- Candidates to the presidential list, the WCAMT, the WMSC and the Senate will be required to adhere to the same standards of professional integrity as those applying for election to the FIA Courts, the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Committee, the Cost Cap Adjudication Panel, the Audit Committee and the Ethics Committee.
Amendments to the FIA Code of Ethics
The EGA agreed to amend the FIA Code of Ethics, aiming to align with the recently adopted amendments to the FIA Statutes and to strengthen the undertaking of elected members regarding confidentiality.
FIA Extraordinary General Assemblies in 2026 and 2027
Following the successful 2025 FIA Conference hosted in Macau by Member Club the Automobile General Association Macau-China (AAMC), supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group, the FIA Members voted in favour of holding the 2026 and 2027 EGA in Macau. It has also been agreed to hold the 2026 and 2027 FIA Conference at the Galaxy Macau.
Senate President Carmelo Sanz de Barros said: “This year’s Extraordinary General Assemblies was an important opportunity for our community to come together and create a clearer, stronger future for our Federation. As well as moving forward with innovative solutions for FIA Members in areas such as digital licensing and sustainable practices, we have also taken steps to strengthen our electoral process and preserve the regulatory interests of the Federation.

Our Federation’s governance is stronger than ever, with a state-of-the-art compliance framework and clear and transparent procedures. I look forward to continuing this important work with our Members until we meet again at our next General Assemblies in Tashkent.”
The FIA’s next General Assemblies will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan this December.
