The ‘Safe Helmets – New Era’ programme, developed by the Automóvil Club de Costa Rica, protects riders and the planet by distributing certified helmets and recycling damaged or unsafe equipment. To date, approximately 3,400 helmets have been recycled in the country, helping prevent an estimated 5.1 to 13.6 tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere. The fifth edition of the programme was launched with the delivery of 150 certified helmets in collaboration with the Road Safety Council and the Municipality of San José.

A new report from the FIA has revealed the economic and societal benefits of personal motorised transport and mobility. The report identifies personal vehicles as drivers of economic activity, improving connectivity, reducing travel times, and expanding access to jobs and services. Limited access to personal mobility for rural and underserved populations has been highlighted as a factor in increased inequality and reduced quality of life.

FIA wishes to get a better understanding of the private benefits of mobility and personal transport. For this purpose, this study summarises findings from the existing literature on the private benefits of personal transport, with a focus on personal transport by private car and motorcycle.
