During the meeting, Mr Todt discussed possible actions to reduce the almost 600 road related fatalities that occur each year in the country, which has a population of three million. In particular, the importance of putting in place effective legislation which is enforced on key risk factors like drink-driving, speeding, helmet and child seat use, was emphasised. The local authorities are also seeking to address a problem whereby most cars are imported from Japan, therefore being right hand cars, whereas cars drive on the right.

Prior to this meeting, Jean Todt also met with four Mongolian Ministers: Munkh-Orgil Tsend, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Byambatsogt Sandag, Minister for Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, Ganbat Dangaa Minister for Ministry of Road and Transport Development and Munkhbayar Gombosuren Minister for Ministry of Construction and Urban Development. Mr Todt presented them with the new FIA-JCDecaux road safety campaign, which was launched on 10 March in Paris. Aiming to raise awareness on the 3500 people who die every day on the world’s roads, the #3500LIVES campaign features 13 famous ambassadors from the sport, film and music industries such as Antoine Griezmann, Yohan Blake, Fernando Alonso, Pharrell Williams and Michelle Yeoh. It invites the public to sign a ten-point manifesto (sign here), which calls on all governments to make road safety a priority and introduce effective legislation on key risk factors on the road.
