FIA Prize Giving 2020

As is traditional at this time of the year, we look back on the recently concluded season, recalling the highlights and celebrating our champions.

On this occasion, we have a very different year to reflect on, a time marked by uncertainty, and a year that was unprecedented for the whole motor sport community.

On the day of the FIA Prize Giving, I am pleased to acknowledge that, through initiative, tireless commitment and creativity, the many challenges of 2020 were overcome.

Owing to the strict protocols in place, another chapter of motor sport history has been written and records have been broken.

Formula 1 set an example for other disciplines by being the first international sporting competition to restart. Lewis Hamilton went on to equal Michael Schumacher in titles won, with 7 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championships. In WRC, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia also won their 7th drivers’title.

Our promoters and the entire FIA family deserve recognition for their efforts to safeguard their respective competitions, often having to find solutions that did not seem obvious at the time. This included visiting territories never explored before or revisiting historic venues from yesterday.

Unfortunately, as a consequence of COVID-19, some races had to be called off but that was in the best interest of their stakeholders and competitors. With the time to regroup, I am confident that in 12 months’ time we will gather again and celebrate all the FIA champions, including those who were unable to compete this season.

This year, we also launched the #PurposeDriven movement working towards positive contribution to society, with a special focus on health and safety, environment, diversity and inclusion as well as community involvement and development. More of this initiative will be seen next year.

With my most hearfelt wishes for your continued safety and health in these troubled times,

Jean Todt

FIA President
