Eighteen cars set for 2022 FIA Historic Formula 3 European Cup at Zandvoort

The FIA Historic Formula 3 European Cup, a unique celebration of the category, its cars and history, will be staged this weekend at Zandvoort, Netherlands – the same circuit where the first round of the European F3 Championship was held in 1978.

With the entry equally split into two categories for Category 1 (1971-1978) and Category 2 (1979-1984) cars for this year’s running of the Cup, the Zandvoort event will feature six different chassis manufacturers, four engine tuners and drivers from all over Europe.

Returning Category 1 Cup winner Valerio Leone looks set for an intense weekend with his son Davide having shown an impressive form in the build-up to the event. Yet, Frederic Rouvier the French historic circuit defending Champion will try to overturn his last two unlucky runs in the Cup to try and take top honours this year.

For Category 2, with the absence of double Cup winner Tom Olsen this year, fellow Dane Michael Rinström could be set for a clean run towards top honours this weekend, the driver having shown an impressive speed in his comeback weekend earlier this season with a win following a two-year break due to COVID-19. However, Frederic Lajoux from Monaco could well be the man, the Monegasque having shown the most consistent of all aboard his March 793 VW-Spiess in the French Championship earlier this season.

Angela Grasso will be the only female driver on the grid. She has competed since the inaugural FIA Historic Formula 3 European Cup in 2018.  The Italian is also racing the only Dallara on the grid, a Category 2 1982 Alfa Romeo – Novamotor powered 382 chassis.

Action for the 2022 FIA Historic Formula 3 European Cup will begin on Friday 15 July, with Free Practice lasting 25 minutes at 08h10 and 25 minutes of qualifying at 14h05.  Race 1 is on Saturday between 15h55 and 16h20, with race 2 at 09h25 on Sunday.  The aggregate results from both races will decide the class winners.
