Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam) still having been beaten by his rival Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) in first qualifying, he came good in his next opportunity.

In second qualifying of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the 4.307 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort, the Swede posted the fastest lap time while this time, the Italian had to make do with second place. Markus Pommer (Motopark) and Jake Dennis (Prema Powerteam) were classified third and fourth respectively. In the ranking of the second-fastest lap times, used to determine the starting grid positions for the third race, Giovinazzi came out on top. Pommer, Rosenqvist and Dennis followed in second to fourth place.

Starting grid race 2

Five minutes into the session, Felix Rosenqvist (1:29.713 minutes) moved to the top of the timing screen, but lost this position again to Antonio Giovinazzi (1:29.722 minutes) only a little bit later. After another six minutes, the order in front changed once again, this time in Rosenqvist’s favour as he beat Giovinazzi’s time. Then, it was the Italian’s turn again, but his attempts to outpace the Swede were to no avail. As a result, he had to make do with second place while Rosenqvist will be starting from the best grid position into the second race at Zandvoort.

Markus Pommer (1:30.239 minutes) repeated his third place from first qualifying and scored the same result in the second session. Behind fourth-placed Jake Dennis (1:30.426 minutes), Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam, 1:30.450 minutes) was the best-placed rookie ahead of Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing, 1:30.503 minutes), another rookie and the current FIA Formula 3 European Championship points’ leader. Alexander Albon (Signature, 1:30.663 minutes), George Russell (Carlin, 1:30.666 minutes), Sérgio Sette Câmara (Motopark, 1:30.679 minutes) and Maximilian Günther (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport, 1:30.701 minutes) ended up in seventh to tenth place.

Starting grid race 3

In the ranking of the second-fastest lap, it was Antonio Giovinazzi (1:30.065 minutes) who came out on top again. His rival Felix Rosenqvist (1:30.289 minutes) not only ended up behind the Italian, but also behind Markus Pommer (1:30.262 minutes). Jake Dennis (1:30.433 minutes), Lance Stroll (1:30.480 minutes), Sérgio Sette Câmara (1:30.763 minutes), George Russell (1:30.926 minutes), Alexander Albon (1:31.001 minutes), Ryan Tveter (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, 1:31.044 minutes) and Charles Leclerc (1:31.185 minutes) followed suit, with Stroll again as the best-placed rookie.

Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam): “I set my fastest lap time very early in the session with new tyres. Unfortunately, on the laps after that, I had traffic all the time. With another clear lap, I could have claimed both pole positions.”

Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin): “For me, this qualifying wasn’t easy. With my first set of new tyres, I was in front, but with the second set, I had an issue with the left front tyre. Therefore, I had to turn into the pits once more. Unfortunately, after that, I could only do one more fast lap, which wasn’t enough to claim pole, but at least for a position on the front row of the grid.”
