2013 Rally de Portugal - Day 1

Submitted by jrigby on Fri, 04/12/2013 - 18:47
RALLY DE PORTUGAL
(11-14 APRIL 2013)

RALLY NEWS

The fourth round of the FIA World Rally Championship got underway today and Championship leader Sébastien Ogier has claimed the early advantage. Dani Sordo is however hot on his heels in second position, having found a welcome return to form, and Jari-Matti Latvala holds the final provisional podium position.

Rally de Portugal kicked off last night with a ceremonial start in the coastal resort of Vilamoura but today the 70 competing crews took to the surrounding hills for two loops of two identical stages before heading to Lisbon for a spectacular asphalt super special stage in the heart of the city. In total the route covered five stages and 80.55 competitive kilometres.

This morning the talk was all about tyre choice and Ogier was the only driver to select a full complement of soft compound tyres, gaining him an advantage in the first stage. It ultimately proved not to be the optimum choice for the two loops of stages and the Frenchman failed to win any of the other stages but maintained pace to be able to overnight with 4.4 seconds in hand to Sordo. The Spaniard is enjoying a much better run in the Citroën DS3 in Portugal and he won stages three and four to close the gap. Latvala has run without problems but the Finn lacked confidence in the first loop and continues to work on honing the suspension settings to his liking. Mads Østberg was one of the early front-runners, the Ford Fiesta driver winning stage two to take the lead of the event. However, on the following stage the Norwegian went off the road, rolled, and was forced into a disappointing retirement. Mikko Hirvonen - winner of the super special stage - is fourth for Citroën with a reasonable cushion to fifth-place Thierry Neuville. Evgeny Novikov rounds off the top six.

Former Formula One driver Robert Kubica - making his debut in the FIA World Rally Championship -slid wide in the second stage and branches pierced the radiator resulting in overheating problems. Having carried out his own repairs on the following road section, Kubica climbed to 13th overall and second in the FIA WRC 2 Championship category. However, en route to the final super special of the day, the Pole was forced into retirement with a puncture and no available spare.

FP2: Massa takes over at top in Shanghai

Submitted by justin on Fri, 04/12/2013 - 13:47

Massa’s time of 1:35.340, set around the hour mark was sufficient for him to finish FP2 the fastest man at the Shanghai International Circuit. Behind him a mixed order provided very little indication of form. The Lotus of Kimi Räikkönen was second, a tenth down on the Brazilian but three tenths up on the other Ferrari of Fernando Alonso. Fourth was this morning’s pace-setter Nico Rosberg for Mercedes, ahead of Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

Jenson Button was sixth for McLaren, just in front of Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes. Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta were eighth and ninth respectively for Force India with World Champion Sebastian Vettel rounding out the top ten in the second Red Bull

The session had begun with every indication of Mercedes continuing their dominance from the morning’s running. With most cars heading directly into runs when the track opened, Rosberg was leading at the 15 minute mark with 1:37.463, backed-up by team-mate Hamilton.  The session was over before it begun, however,  for Max Chilton whose Marussia stopped out on track, while others cars had a succession of slides and spins.

The order began to move around as runners switched to the soft compound unusually early, keen to gather data with a tyre not as yet used for racing this season. Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne was the first to try the option but he was soon followed by Webber, who duly went sixth-tenths under Rosberg, the new benchmark being 1:36.092. It was as short-lived advantage as Rosberg switched to the soft tyre and hit back with 1:35.819.

Meanwhile Williams finally got Valtteri Bottas running. The Finn’s car having had difficulty firing up. With drivers preparing for long runs in the second half of the session, it was Räikkönen and Massa who popped in the quickest times with the Brazilian going quickest of anyone on the day with 1:35.340 before heavy tyre wear took it’s toll, resulting in the leaders gradually losing pace across their as the session progressed. Several cited the wear as excessive, though Pirelli have since suggested they expect the track to evolve and the problems to lessen as the weekend progresses.

FP1: Rosberg quickest in Shanghai FP1

Submitted by justin on Fri, 04/12/2013 - 08:07

Despite Mercedes playing down their chances of repeating last year’s Chinese Grand Prix victory, the leaderboard after FP1 had a familiar look to it with Nico Rosberg the fastest driver on view.

Half a second behind him, team-mate Lewis Hamilton held P2 and then a further half-second back, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were P3 and P4 respectively for Red Bull Racing.

Fernando Alonso slotted into fifth for Ferrari, followed by the improving McLaren of Jenson Button and then Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari. Adrian Sutil was eighth for Force India, with Romain Grosjean’s Lotus separating him from tenth-placed team-mate Paul di Resta.

The session got off to a typically slow start. After an installation lap the expected front runners retired to the garages, waiting for the track to rubber-in. One of those to go out early was Ma Qing Hua, running as a Friday driver for Caterham after four Friday appearances last year for HRT. He was replacing Charles Pic for the session.

Serious running started with half an hour gone and Jenson Button was the early pacesetter with a time of 1:41.798 – though at that point Red Bull, Ferrari, Lotus and Mercedes had not ventured out of the garage. When they did, Kimi Räikkönen had a spin at turn nine, the first of the session. With wide runoffs available at the Shanghai International Circuit, he was followed by many others as they tested the limits of the track.

Webber rose to P1 with 50 minutes of the session run, lowering the bar to 1:37.658 but that was soon eclipsed by Hamilton and Rosberg and the latter’s time of 1:36.717 stood until the end of the session. With the leading cars running long-run simulations on the medium tyre, no-one improved in the last half-hour and the order stayed static until the flag.
